Hakan Şükür (born September 1, 1971) is a famous Turkish former footballer. He played as a striker, which means he was a forward player who focused on scoring goals. People called him the "Bull of the Bosphorus" and Kral, which means "king" in Turkish.
He spent most of his career playing for Galatasaray, a big football club in Turkey. He was the top goal scorer in the Süper Lig (Turkey's main football league) three times. During his time at Galatasaray, he helped the team win 14 major titles.
Hakan Şükür also played for the Turkish national team 112 times. He scored 51 goals, making him Turkey's all-time top scorer. He was known as one of the best strikers of his time. He scored 383 goals in his club career. He also scored the fastest goal ever in a FIFA World Cup match in 2002. He stopped playing football in 2008.
After his football career, Hakan Şükür became a politician. He was elected as a Member of Parliament in Turkey in 2011. He later left his political party in 2013 and became an independent politician. Since 2016, he has been living in the United States.

Football Career Highlights
Starting Out in Football
Hakan Şükür was born in Sapanca, Turkey. He started his football journey with a local club called Sakaryaspor. He played his first professional game when he was almost 17 years old. His first goal was a winning goal in a match against Eskişehirspor in 1989. He scored 18 more goals for Sakaryaspor over three years.
In 1990, Şükür joined another top team, Bursaspor. He scored six goals in 27 games in his second season. This helped his team finish in sixth place. Soon after, he made his debut for the Turkish national team.
Playing for Galatasaray and Torino
Later, Şükür joined the famous Turkish club Galatasaray. He quickly became known as the Bull of the Bosphorus because of his strong playing style. In his first year with Galatasaray (1992–93), he scored 19 goals. He helped the team win both the league and the cup. He continued to score many goals in the next two seasons.
In 1995, he moved to Torino in Italy. He was only the second Turkish player to play in Italy's top league, Serie A. However, he found it hard to settle in Italy and scored only one goal. He returned to Galatasaray a few months later.
Returning to Galatasaray
Back at Galatasaray, Şükür started scoring goals again. He scored 16 goals in the league in the 1995–96 season. He helped Galatasaray win the cup again. The next season, he scored an amazing 38 goals in the league. This was one of the highest numbers of goals ever scored in a single season in Turkey. He won the "Gol Kralı" (Goal King) award for being the top scorer for three seasons in a row. Galatasaray also won the league title in all three of those seasons.
In the 1999–2000 season, Şükür's last time playing for Galatasaray in this period, the team won both the league and the cup. They also won the UEFA Cup, which is a big European competition. This was the first time a Turkish team had won a European title. Şükür scored in the penalty shootout that helped Galatasaray win against Arsenal.
Time in Italy and England
After Galatasaray, Şükür moved to Italy again to play for Inter Milan. He scored six goals there. He didn't play as much because other famous strikers like Ronaldo and Christian Vieri were also on the team. In 2002, he moved to Parma, another Italian team, where he scored three goals. He helped Parma win the Coppa Italia, which is Italy's main cup competition.
Later in 2002, Şükür joined Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League in England. He broke his leg during training, which kept him out for two months. When he returned, he scored two goals in nine games, both in a match against Fulham.
Final Years at Galatasaray
Hakan Şükür returned to Galatasaray for a third time in 2003. He continued to score many goals for the team. In the 2003–04 season, he scored 12 goals. The next season, he scored 18 goals and helped the team win the Turkish Cup. In 2003, he was chosen as Turkey's "Golden Player" by the Turkish Football Federation. This award recognized him as the most outstanding Turkish player of the past fifty years.
In the 2005–06 season, Şükür scored ten goals as Galatasaray won the league again. He helped the club win a record 17th league title in 2007–08. After this, he decided to retire from football at almost 37 years old. He often appeared as a football expert on television after he retired.
Playing for His Country
Hakan Şükür first played for the Turkish national team in 1992. He scored his first international goal in his second game against Denmark. He scored many goals during the qualification rounds for major tournaments. He played in UEFA Euro 1996 but Turkey did not score any goals in that tournament.
He scored eight goals in the qualification for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Four of these goals came in one game against Wales. At UEFA Euro 2000, he scored two goals in a group stage win against Belgium.
During the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan, Şükür scored one goal for Turkey. The national team finished in third place, which was a great achievement. On June 29, he scored the fastest goal ever in a World Cup match. He scored against South Korea just 10.8 seconds into the third-place play-off game. Turkey won that match 3–2.
Hakan Şükür was the captain of the Turkish national team in 30 of his 112 games. He played in some qualification games for UEFA Euro 2008, scoring four goals against Moldova. His last game for Turkey was in October 2007, when he was 36 years old.
Life Outside Football
Hakan Şükür's family has Albanian roots. His parents came from what was then Yugoslavia. His father was born in Pristina, and his mother in Skopje.
He has three children with his second wife, Beyda. In 2010, a football stadium in Sancaktepe was named after him. However, his name was removed from the stadium in 2014.
In Politics
On June 18, 2011, Hakan Şükür was elected as a Member of Parliament in Turkey. He represented Istanbul Province for the Justice and Development Party.
In December 2013, he left the party. He then continued to serve as an independent Member of Parliament. After his time as a politician, he worked as a football expert for a Turkish television and radio company.
Life in the United States
Hakan Şükür moved to the United States in 2015. He shared in an interview that after his political term ended, he faced difficulties finding work in Turkey. He decided to move to California with his family.
He obtained a special visa that allowed him to invest in the U.S. He became a part-owner of a cafe in Palo Alto in 2016. He later left that job. In 2019, he mentioned in a video that he was working as an Uber driver and selling books. He also stated that the Turkish government had taken control of his properties, businesses, and bank accounts in Turkey.
In April 2023, Hakan Şükür announced that he and his family had received their green cards. This allows them to live and work permanently in the U.S. As of August 2023, he has opened a football school in Palo Alto, California. He coaches boys aged 10-13 and 13-17 at this school.
His name is still a sensitive topic in Turkey. In December 2022, a sports commentator was removed from a live World Cup broadcast. This happened after he mentioned Şükür's record for the fastest World Cup goal. The commentator was later fired from his job.
