Hakan Şükür (born 1 September 1971) is a famous Turkish former footballer. He played as a striker, which means he was a goal scorer. People called him the "Bull of the Bosphorus" and Kral (which means king).
He spent most of his career playing for Galatasaray. He was the top goal scorer in the Süper Lig three times. He helped Galatasaray win 14 major titles, including the UEFA Cup in 2000. This was a big achievement for a Turkish team!
Hakan Şükür also played for the Turkish national team 112 times. He scored 51 goals, making him Turkey's all-time top scorer. He even scored the fastest goal ever in a World Cup match in 2002. He stopped playing football in 2008.
After his football career, he became a politician. He was elected as a Member of Parliament in 2011. He later moved to the United States in 2016.

Hakan Şükür's Football Journey
Starting Out in Turkey
Hakan Şükür was born in Sapanca, Turkey. He started his football career at Sakaryaspor when he was almost 17. He scored his first goal in February 1989. He helped his team win the game. He scored 18 goals for the club over three years.
In 1990, Şükür joined Bursaspor. In his second season there, he scored six goals in 27 games. This helped the team finish sixth in the league. Soon after, he played for the Turkish national team for the first time.
Becoming a Star at Galatasaray
After Bursaspor, Şükür joined the big club Galatasaray. In his first year (1992–93), he scored 19 goals. He helped Galatasaray win both the league and the cup. He scored even more goals in the next two seasons.
In 1995, he moved to Torino in Italy. He was only the second Turkish player to play in Serie A. But he didn't stay long and returned to Galatasaray.
Back to Galatasaray and European Success
When he came back to Galatasaray, Şükür started scoring many goals again. In the 1996–97 season, he scored 38 goals in the league. This was one of the highest numbers of goals ever scored in a Turkish league season. He won the "Goal King" award for being the top scorer in the next two seasons. Galatasaray also won the league title three years in a row.
In the 1999–2000 season, Galatasaray won the league and cup again. They also won the UEFA Cup. This was the first time a Turkish team won a European title. Hakan Şükür scored in the penalty shootout against Arsenal in the final.
Playing in Italy and England
After his second time at Galatasaray, Şükür moved to Italy again. He joined Inter Milan. He scored six goals there. He then played for Parma and helped them win the Coppa Italia.
In 2002, he moved to England to play for Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League. He scored two goals in nine games for them.
Final Years at Galatasaray
Hakan Şükür returned to Galatasaray for a third time in 2003. He continued to score many goals. In 2003, he scored two goals against Juventus in the Champions League. In November 2003, he was named Turkey's "Golden Player" by the Turkish Football Federation. This award celebrated him as the best Turkish player of the past fifty years.
He helped Galatasaray win the league again in 2006 and 2008. He retired from football in 2008, at almost 37 years old. He scored 38 goals in all European competitions during his career.
Playing for Turkey
Hakan Şükür played his first game for Turkey in 1992. He scored his first international goal in his second match. He scored seven goals in the qualifiers for UEFA Euro 1996. He played in all of Turkey's matches at the tournament.
He scored eight goals in the qualifiers for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Four of these goals came in one game against Wales. At UEFA Euro 2000, he scored two goals.
World Cup Hero
At the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan, Hakan Şükür scored one goal. Turkey finished in third place, which was a huge success! On June 29, he scored the fastest goal ever in a World Cup. It happened just 10.8 seconds into the third-place play-off game against South Korea. Turkey won that game 3–2.
He was the captain for Turkey in 30 of his 112 games. He played his last international game in 2007.
Personal Life
Hakan Şükür's family is from Albania. His parents came from Yugoslavia.
He married Esra Elbirlik in 1995, but they later divorced. He then married Beyda Sertbaş in 1999. They have three children together.
In 2010, a football stadium in Sancaktepe was named after him. However, his name was removed from the stadium in 2014.
Life After Football and Politics
In 2011, Hakan Şükür was elected as a Member of Parliament in Turkey. He was part of the Justice and Development Party. In 2013, he left the party to become an independent MP.
After his time as a politician, Hakan Şükür moved to the United States in 2015. He said he faced difficulties finding work in Turkey. He and his family received their green cards in 2023, allowing them to live and work in the US.
He has worked as an Uber driver and sold books. As of 2023, Hakan Şükür has opened a football school in Palo Alto, California. He teaches boys aged 10-13 and 13-17.
His name is still well-known in Turkey. In 2022, a TV commentator was removed from a World Cup broadcast for mentioning Hakan Şükür's record for the fastest World Cup goal.
