New Rulers and Leaders
In 1160, several important leaders changed:

- In the Khmer Empire (which was a powerful empire in Southeast Asia), Yasovarman II became the new ruler. He took over from his uncle, Dharanindravarman. Dharanindravarman's son, named Jayavarman, agreed to this change and went to live in a nearby country called Champa.

- In Japan, a big conflict called the Heiji Rebellion happened. A rebellion is when people or groups fight against the government or ruling power. This rebellion was a short but important civil war.
New Cities and Places
- The town of Spital am Semmering was started in a place called Styria (which is now part of Austria). It was founded by a leader named Margrave Ottokar III of Styria. A Margrave was a type of noble ruler in the Holy Roman Empire.
- The city of Tomar was founded in Portugal. It was started by a knight named Gualdim Pais.
