Key English Battles
The year 1461 saw some very important battles in England. These fights were part of a long struggle for the throne, known as the Wars of the Roses.
- On February 2, the Battle of Mortimer's Cross took place. Edward, Duke of York, led his troops to victory. They defeated the Lancastrian forces, which included Owen Tudor and his son, Jasper Tudor, Earl of Pembroke. This battle was fought in Wales.
- Just a few weeks later, on February 17, the Second Battle of St Albans happened. Here, the army of the Earl of Warwick was defeated. Queen Margaret led the Lancastrian side to victory. She was able to get her husband, the king, back under her control.
- On March 29, the very bloody Battle of Towton was fought. This battle is thought to be the most violent battle ever in England. Edward IV defeated Queen Margaret's forces. This win helped him secure his claim to the English throne.
New Rulers Take Power
- After his victories, on March 4, the Duke of York took control of London. He then declared himself King Edward IV of England.
- Later, Edward, the son of Richard of York, was officially crowned as Edward IV. He became the King of England and ruled until 1483.
- In France, Louis XI of France became the new king. He took over from Charles VII of France and ruled until 1483.

- On August 15, the Empire of Trebizond fell. This was the last major place that still followed old Roman-Greek traditions. It was taken over by the Ottoman Empire under Mehmed II after a 21-day siege.
- The city of Sarajevo was founded in 1461. It is now the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was founded by the Ottomans.
Famous Artists and Writers
- Two very famous artists, Leonardo da Vinci and Sandro Botticelli, started their training in 1461. They both became students of Verrocchio, a well-known artist and teacher.
- The writer François Villon published his famous work, Le Grand Testament, in this year.
- The sculptor Donatello created his well-known artwork, Judith and Holofernes, around this time.
