Major Events in 27 BC

Octavian Becomes Augustus

On January 16 of 27 BC, something very important happened in Ancient Rome. The Roman Senate, which was like the main government group, gave a man named Octavian a special new name. They called him Augustus. This name meant "respected" or "great." Octavian liked this name and chose it over another name, "Romulus." From that day on, he was known as Augustus. This was a big step in his rise to power.

Augustus and Agrippa as Consuls

In 27 BC, Augustus became a consul for the seventh time. A consul was one of the two most important leaders in the Roman Republic. His close friend and helper, Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, also became a consul for the third time. Together, they held a lot of power in Rome.

Augustus Returns Power

Even though Augustus was becoming very powerful, he made a smart move. As consul, he officially gave some power back to the Roman Senate. This showed that he respected the old traditions of Rome. It also helped him keep the support of the Senate and the Roman people.

Changes to the Roman Army

Augustus also started making big changes to the Roman army. He wanted to make it stronger and more organized. These changes helped him control the vast Roman Empire more effectively.

Earthquake in Egypt

Far away in Ancient Egypt, an earthquake caused damage. It shattered the northern statue of the Colossi of Memnon. These were two huge stone statues of a pharaoh. This event was written about by an ancient writer named Strabo.
