Octavian Becomes Augustus
On January 16 of 27 BC, something very important happened in Ancient Rome. The Roman Senate, which was like the main government group, gave a man named Octavian a special new name. They called him Augustus. This name meant "respected" or "great." Octavian liked this name and chose it over another name, "Romulus." From that day on, he was known as Augustus.
