Key Events of 69 AD
The Year of Four Emperors
After Emperor Nero died, four different men ruled as emperor in just one year. This was a very unusual and chaotic time for Rome.
- First, Galba became emperor. He was an older general.
- Then, Otho took over.
- After Otho, Vitellius became emperor.
- Finally, Vespasian became the emperor and brought stability back to Rome.
Important Changes and Battles
- January 15 – Otho took control in Rome and said he was the new Roman Emperor. He ruled for about three months.
- April 2 – Galba, who was a governor in Spain, declared himself a special leader of Rome. This was a big deal because he broke the line of emperors that started with Caesar and Augustus. However, Galba was killed by the Praetorian Guard, who were the emperor's special soldiers. They supported Otho instead.
- April 14 – In the First Battle of Bedriacum, Vitellius's armies defeated Otho's armies.
- April 17 – After his victory at Bedriacum, Vitellius became the new Roman emperor.
- First Jewish–Roman War – While all this was happening in Rome, Vespasian was leading Roman armies in a war against the Jewish people. He began to surround the city of Jerusalem. Later, after Vespasian became emperor, his son Titus captured Jerusalem.
- October 24 – In the Second Battle of Bedriacum, Vespasian's supporters, led by Antonius Primus, defeated Vitellius's armies.
- December 21 – Vespasian officially became the Roman Emperor. He started the Flavian family line of emperors.
