Amargosa Valley, once known as Lathrop Wells, is a small community in Nevada, USA. It's not an official city but an unincorporated town. You can find it along U.S. Route 95 in Nye County.

What is Amargosa Valley?

This community gets its name from the Amargosa River. This river flows through the valley. It starts in Nevada and ends in Death Valley, California.

The Amargosa River

The Amargosa River is about 200 miles (320 km) long. Like many rivers in the desert, it usually flows underground. You only see it on the surface when there's a lot of rain. This rain causes floods in the dry riverbeds. However, there's one part near Shoshone, California, about 20 miles (32 km) long, where the river flows all the time.

Where is Amargosa Valley located?

Amargosa Valley is located between U.S. Route 95 to the north and the California border to the south. Some of the streets in the town even cross into California. Much of the border here is next to Death Valley National Park. The park's boundary extends into Nevada near Beatty. This is about 30 miles (50 km) northwest of Amargosa Valley.

The town is about 88 miles (142 km) northwest of Las Vegas. It's also 35 miles (56 km) northwest of Pahrump. And it's 24 miles (39 km) north of Death Valley Junction, California.

History of Amargosa Valley

The Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad used to run through the valley. This was from 1906 to 1940. It was used for transporting materials from borax mining.

Modern Development

Modern growth in Amargosa Valley didn't really start until the early 1950s. People didn't even have electric power from a company until 1963. Before that, they had to use their own generators.

Until the early 1990s, Amargosa Valley didn't grow much. But recently, Las Vegas has grown a lot. This has caused many new people to move to Amargosa Valley. They also moved to nearby Pahrump.

Geography and Landscape

Amargosa Valley is located at 36.58001 North latitude and 116.44487 West longitude. It is about 2,640 feet (805 meters) above sea level.

Desert Environment

The landscape here is typical of the lower parts of the Mojave Desert. It has flat areas with sandy soil. You'll also see rocky mounds and hills.

Plants and Wildlife

The main native plants are White Bursage and Creosote Bush. At higher elevations, you might see some Joshua Trees and Cacti. Many non-native plants have also been brought into the area.
