The Ameritech Cup was a famous tennis tournament for women. It was also known by other names, like the Virginia Slims of Chicago and the Avon Championships of Chicago. This event took place every year in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
It started in 1971 and ended in 1997. The tournament was part of the WTA Tour, which is the main professional tennis circuit for women. Different companies helped pay for the tournament over the years. These sponsors included Virginia Slims, Avon, and Ameritech.
The tournament was played on special indoor carpet courts. It was ranked at different levels of importance within the WTA Tour. These levels were called Tier III, Tier I, and Tier II. Tier I was the highest level.
One player, Martina Navratilova, was incredibly successful at this tournament. She won the singles competition 12 times! She also won the doubles competition 7 times. Other top players who won here include Chris Evert, Monica Seles, and Lindsay Davenport. These players were all once ranked as the world's No. 1 tennis player.
