Aonach Beag is a tall mountain found in the Scottish Highlands. It stands about 3 kilometers (2 miles) east of Ben Nevis. This mountain is close to the town of Fort William. It is one of the highest peaks in the British Isles. Only Ben Nevis and some mountains in the Cairngorms are taller.

What's in a Name?

Aonach Beag is connected to its neighbor, Aonach Mòr. A high saddle, or bealach, links the two mountains. The name Aonach Beag means "small ridge" in Gaelic. Aonach Mòr means "big ridge." You might think Aonach Beag is smaller. But it is actually taller than Aonach Mòr! The names describe how wide or bulky the mountains are, not how high they are.

How to Climb Aonach Beag

There are a few ways to reach the top of Aonach Beag. One easy way is to use the gondola lift at the Nevis Range ski area. This lift takes you up to 650 meters (2,130 feet). From there, you can follow the ridge that connects Aonach Mòr to Aonach Beag.

Many people prefer to climb Aonach Beag from the south. This route starts from Glen Nevis. Climbing this way helps you avoid the ski area equipment. Hikers often climb both Aonach Beag and Aonach Mòr on the same trip.

Long-Lasting Snow

Aonach Beag is famous for its long-lasting snow patch. This patch is on the mountain's north face. It sits at about 950 meters (3,117 feet) high. This snow patch is one of the longest-lasting in Scotland. It has been known to stay frozen until new snow falls in winter. For example, it lasted continuously from late 2006 until late November 2011.
