The Arrondissement of Vichy is a special kind of administrative area in France. Think of it like a large district. It is part of the Allier département, which is similar to a county. The main city and capital of this arrondissement is Vichy.

History of Vichy Arrondissement

The idea of arrondissements in France began on 17 February 1800. At first, Vichy was not its own arrondissement. Instead, it was part of the arrondissement of Lapalisse.

Later, on 24 August 1941, something changed. The capital of the Lapalisse arrondissement was moved. It went from the city of Lapalisse to the city of Vichy. At that time, Vichy was also the capital city of the French State.

Geography of Vichy Arrondissement

The Arrondissement of Vichy is located in the southeastern part of the Allier department. It shares borders with other areas. To the west and north, it borders the Moulins arrondissement.

To the east, it is next to the Saône-et-Loire department. This department is in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. To the southeast, it borders the Loire department. The Puy-de-Dôme department is to the south. Finally, to the southwest, it borders the Montluçon arrondissement.

This arrondissement covers an area of about 2,016 square kilometers (778 square miles). In 2014, about 122,267 people lived here. This makes it the most populated arrondissement in Allier. The population density is about 60.6 people per square kilometer. This means there are about 60 people living in each square kilometer of land.
