Avon is a small town located in Franklin County, Maine, United States. According to the 2020 census, 450 people live there. Avon is special because it is home to Mount Blue, which is part of Mount Blue State Park.

History of Avon
Avon was first settled in 1781 by two sea captains, Joshua Soule and Perkins Allen. It was originally known as Township 2 Abbott's Purchase. The town officially became incorporated on February 22, 1802. It was named after the River Avon in England. One of the first settlers, Captain Joshua Soule, had an ancestor who was a Pilgrim on the Mayflower ship.
The land around the Sandy River was very good for farming. People grew grain, fruit, and vegetables there. In 1837, when 767 people lived in Avon, they produced a lot of wheat. Later, in 1875, two sawmills were working in the town.
A railroad called the Sandy River Railroad opened in 1879. This railroad helped transport goods and visitors between Avon and other towns like Farmington and Strong. It later became part of a bigger railroad system. However, during the Great Depression in 1935, the railroad stopped running.
Geography and Nature
Avon covers a total area of about 41.65 square miles (107.87 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water. The town is drained by the Sandy River, which flows into the Kennebec River.
A very important natural feature in Avon is Mount Blue. This mountain is about 3,192 feet (973 meters) above sea level. It is part of Mount Blue State Park, which is a popular place for outdoor activities. Mount Blue is located in the southwestern part of Avon.
State routes 4 and 149 pass through the town. Avon shares its borders with several other towns. These include Phillips to the north, Strong to the east, Weld to the west, and Temple to the south.

The population of Avon has changed over the years. In 1810, there were 304 people. By 2020, the population was 450.

In 2010, there were 461 people living in Avon. These people lived in 216 different households. About 25.5% of these households had children under 18 years old living with them. Many households were married couples living together.
The average age of people in Avon was about 46.9 years old. About 21.3% of the residents were under 18 years old. About 17.1% of the population was 65 years old or older. The town had a fairly even mix of males and females.
