Bardon is a suburb located west of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It's about 5.7 kilometers northwest of Brisbane's city center. Bardon is a green, residential area nestled near the foothills of Mount Coot-tha. The neighborhood of Rainworth is also part of Bardon. In 2021, about 10,153 people lived there.

Exploring Bardon's Landscape

Bardon is located on the eastern side of Mount Coot-tha. It has many hills and valleys. Main roads like Simpsons Road and Macgregor Terrace follow the tops of these hills. Some side streets are very steep!

Ithaca Creek, a small stream, flows through Bardon. It helps drain water from Mount Coot-tha. Most homes in Bardon are stand-alone houses.

Rainworth: A Neighborhood within Bardon

Rainworth is a neighborhood in the southeast of Bardon. It was named after "Rainworth House." This house belonged to Sir Augustus Charles Gregory, a famous explorer. He named it after a town in England. After he passed away in 1905, the land was sold for housing. The name "Rainworth" is still used for a local school and businesses. Many residents still feel they live in Rainworth.

Jubilee: A Historic Area

Jubilee is another neighborhood in the northeast of Bardon. It got its name from the "Jubilee Township Estate." This was a land sale that happened in 1887. That year was the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria, which celebrated 50 years of Queen Victoria's rule. The Jubilee area is found between Jubilee Terrace, Coopers Camp Road, and Ithaca Creek.

Bardon's Past: A Look Back

Bardon was first known as 'Upper Paddington'. In 1925, it was officially named Bardon by the Ithaca Town Council. The name came from "Bardon", a large house built in 1863 by Joshua Jeays. He named it after Bardon Hill in his home country, England. Today, Bardon House is part of St Joseph's Catholic Primary School.

Ithaca Creek State School opened on September 28, 1885. It was expected to have 50 students but quickly grew to 188 students by the end of that year.

St Bartholomew's Anglican Church on Simpsons Road was opened in 1923. It held its last service in 1985.

Rainworth State School opened on July 2, 1928. Its original timber building with eight classrooms is still used today.

Trams and Transport History

In 1930, the tram service was extended to Rainworth. The tram stop was right outside Rainworth State School. In 1937, the tram service reached Bardon, with a stop at Simpsons Road and Morgan Terrace. Brisbane's tram network closed down on April 13, 1969. Some old tram waiting sheds are still standing, like one opposite 136 Boundary Road.

St Mary's Magdalene Anglican Church was built in Rainworth in 1937. A new church was built on the same site in 1964, and the old one became the church hall. This church closed around 2010. Since 2012, the building has been used by Magda Community Artz, a group that supports local artists.

St Joseph's Catholic School started on January 24, 1938, with 31 students. The school was first held in the parish church. A new school building was opened in 1939.

Bardon Infants School opened in 1948 and became Bardon State School in 1958. St Mary's Anglican Church in West Bardon was built in 1962.

Things to Do in Bardon

St Mary's Anglican Church is located on Simpsons Road.

Bardon is home to several sports clubs. The Wests Panthers rugby league club and Wests Juniors Leagues Club play at Purtell Park. The Brisbane Irish Rugby Football Club is also there.

In 2012, Voices of Birralee, a group for children and youth choirs, moved their headquarters to Purtell Park. Now, 400 young people rehearse there every week.

Bowman Park is where the Bardon Latrobe (soccer) football club plays. This is one of Brisbane's oldest football clubs. The West Brisbane Cricket Club also plays here. The park was named after David Bowman, a Queensland politician.

You can find a small shopping center and various other shops and restaurants along Macgregor Terrace.

  • Ithaca Creek State School is a government primary school on Lugg Street. It also has a special education program. In 2022, about 630 students attended the school.
  • Rainworth State School is a government primary school on Boundary Road. In 2022, it had about 610 students.
  • St Joseph's School is a Catholic primary school on The Drive. In 2017, about 376 students were enrolled here.
  • Bardon State School is a government primary school on Simpsons Road. In 2017, it had about 316 students.

Getting Around Bardon

Bardon is served by several Transport for Brisbane bus services. These include the 385 BUZ service and the cross-town Great Circle Line (Route 598/599). There is also the 61 Maroon CityGlider and other services that go to the city.

Before 1968, Bardon had a tram line that ended at Morgan Terrace. The bus route has since been extended further out towards Mount Coot-tha.

Bardon is on Metroad 5, a major road that helps people travel north and south around Brisbane. This road connects to other major highways like the Western Freeway.

Three major roads from the west and north meet Macgregor Terrace. Two major roads from the east and south also meet there. This can cause traffic jams during busy times. Plans to upgrade these roads were considered in 2008, but funding was cut in 2011.
