Batavia is a town in Genesee County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 6,293 people lived here. The town's name comes from an old Roman name for a part of the Netherlands.
The Town of Batavia was created in 1802. This happened at the same time as Genesee County. The town is located in the middle of the county. It's important to know that the City of Batavia is a separate place. It is surrounded by the town, but it is not part of the town itself.

A Look Back: Batavia's History
People started settling in the Town of Batavia in the late 1700s. When Genesee County was formed in 1802, the Town of Batavia was the only town in it. Back then, this county and town covered most of western New York.
The main office for the Holland Land Company was in the Village of Batavia. This company owned all the land in this area. Joseph Ellicott was their land agent. He helped start the Village of Batavia. As more counties and towns were created, the size of both Genesee County and the Town of Batavia became smaller. They are now their current size.
Where is Batavia Located?
The Town of Batavia covers about 48.4 square miles (125.4 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a small part, about 0.2 square miles (0.6 square kilometers), is water.
The Tonawanda Creek flows through the town, heading west. The New York State Thruway (which is also Interstate 90) also goes through the town.

- Daws Corners (also called Daws) – This spot is where Quaker Hill Road (Route 98) and Town Line Road meet. It is north of the City of Batavia, right on the northern border of the town.
- East Pembroke – A part of this community is located on the western border of the town, along Route 5.
- Five Corners ("Newkirk") – This hamlet is on the border between Batavia and Elba towns. It's in the northeast corner of the town.
- Genesee Community College – This is a two-year college. It is located northeast of the City of Batavia.
- Genesee County Airport (GVQ) – This is an airport for general aviation. It is north of the City of Batavia. It also handles planes for businesses and the government.
- Putnam Settlement – This location is on the border between the towns of Batavia and Bethany.
- West Batavia – This hamlet is in the southwest corner of the town, on Route 33.
