History of Beaver Bay
Beaver Bay holds a special place in history. It is the oldest settlement along the North Shore of Lake Superior. The community was first established way back in 1856.
Every year, Beaver Bay is also home to an exciting event: the John Beargrease Dog Sled Race. This famous race brings dog sled teams from all over to compete.
Geography and Nature
Beaver Bay covers an area of about 0.799 square miles (2.069 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no large bodies of water inside the city limits.
The Beaver River flows right through the community. This river then empties into the huge and beautiful Lake Superior.
Beaver Bay is located near several other towns:
- It's about 3 miles southwest of Silver Bay.
- It's 24 miles northeast of Two Harbors.
- It's 51 miles northeast of Duluth.
Besides Minnesota Highway 61, other local roads include Lake County Road 4 and Lax Lake Road.
A popular natural attraction, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, is just 5 miles southwest of Beaver Bay. It's a great place to explore the outdoors.
