The Story of Big Hero 6
Meet Hiro and Baymax
The movie takes place in a cool futuristic city called San Fransokyo. It's a mix of San Francisco and Tokyo. Here, we meet Hiro Hamada, a 14-year-old genius. He loves building robots and often spends his time in robot fights. His older brother, Tadashi, wants Hiro to use his talents for good. Tadashi takes Hiro to his university lab, the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology.
At the lab, Hiro meets Tadashi's awesome friends: Go Go, Wasabi, Honey Lemon, and Fred. He also meets Baymax, an inflatable healthcare robot that Tadashi created. Hiro is super impressed and decides he wants to join the university. To get in, he shows off his amazing invention: microbots. These are tiny robots that can connect and form anything you can imagine, controlled by his mind.
A Tragic Event and a New Mystery
Hiro's microbots are a huge success at the university showcase. A rich businessman, Alistair Krei, offers to buy them, but Hiro says no. Professor Robert Callaghan, the head of the robotics program, accepts Hiro into the school. As Hiro and his family leave, a terrible fire breaks out in the showcase hall. Tadashi rushes back inside to save Professor Callaghan, but the building explodes. Tadashi is gone.
Two weeks later, Hiro is very sad about losing his brother. He accidentally activates Baymax. The robot finds Hiro's last microbot, which leads them to an old warehouse. There, they discover someone is making many more microbots! A mysterious person in a Kabuki mask attacks them with the robots. Hiro starts to think the fire wasn't an accident. He believes the masked man stole his microbots and caused the fire to hide it.
Forming a Hero Team
Hiro wants revenge. He gives Baymax special armor and a battle chip with karate moves. They track the masked man to the docks. Suddenly, Tadashi's friends – Go Go, Wasabi, Honey Lemon, and Fred – show up. Baymax had called them! The masked man chases the group, but they escape to Fred's huge mansion. There, they decide to become a high-tech superhero team to stop the villain.
The team believes the masked man is Krei. They track him to an old Krei Tech lab. This lab was used for teleportation experiments, but an accident happened there. The masked man attacks them again. The team manages to stop him and pull off his mask. To their shock, it's Professor Callaghan! He had used the microbots to protect himself from the explosion that killed Tadashi.
Justice and Sacrifice
Hiro is furious that Tadashi died for nothing. He tries to make Baymax hurt Callaghan. But Honey Lemon quickly puts Baymax's healthcare chip back in, stopping him. Callaghan escapes with his mask. Hiro is still determined to get revenge.
Back home, Hiro tries to remove Baymax's healthcare chip again. But Baymax shows him videos of Tadashi working on him. These videos remind Hiro of Tadashi's kindness and legacy. Hiro feels terrible and apologizes to his friends. They promise to catch Callaghan the right way.
The team finds old video footage from the lab accident. It shows that Callaghan's daughter, Abigail, was the test pilot who disappeared in the teleportation experiment. Callaghan is seeking revenge on Krei for this. Callaghan interrupts Krei at a public event and tries to destroy his company using Krei's teleportation portal.
After a big fight, the team takes Callaghan's microbots and mask. They save Krei, but the portal is still open. Baymax senses Abigail is alive inside! He and Hiro jump into the portal to rescue her. They find Abigail in a deep sleep. On the way out, Baymax is hit by debris, damaging his thrusters. Baymax knows he has to sacrifice himself. He asks Hiro if he is "satisfied with his care" to turn off his systems. Hiro tearfully agrees. Baymax fires his rocket fist, pushing Hiro and Abigail back through the portal before it closes. Abigail goes to the hospital, and Callaghan is arrested.
A New Beginning
Later, Hiro finds Baymax's healthcare chip in the rocket fist. He rebuilds Baymax's body, and Baymax remembers everything! They share a big hug. The university gives Hiro a special award and names a building after Tadashi. Hiro, Baymax, and their friends continue to protect San Fransokyo.
In a scene after the credits, Fred talks to a picture of his dad. He's sad his dad isn't there to see him as a superhero. Fred accidentally opens a secret door behind the picture. It leads to a room full of superhero gear! His dad returns and tells Fred they have a lot to talk about.
