Discovering Birtinya's Past
The name Birtinya comes from an Aboriginal word. It means neighbouring. This name was suggested on March 31, 1960. A school called Pacific Lutheran College opened nearby on September 26, 2001. Today, this school is actually in the next-door suburb of Meridan Plains.

Birtinya has grown quite a bit over the years. In 2011, only 314 people lived here. By 2016, the population had jumped to 1,933 people. The latest count in 2021 showed that 4,378 people now live in Birtinya.

Birtinya is built around a lovely spot called Lake Kawana. This lake has a special 2-kilometre course. It's perfect for exciting flat water competitions like rowing or kayaking.
Lake Kawana Community Centre
Right next to Lake Kawana, you'll find the Lake Kawana Community Centre. It's on Sportsmans Drive. This centre has 15 different spaces, including halls and meeting rooms. It also has kitchens for events. The Sunshine Coast Regional Council runs this centre. It officially opened on November 5, 2005. It's a great place for community gatherings and activities.
Sunshine Coast University Hospital
Birtinya is also home to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH). This is a very important hospital for the entire Sunshine Coast and Gympie Region. It's a teaching hospital, which means doctors and nurses also learn there. SCUH welcomed its first patients on March 21, 2017. It was officially opened on April 19, 2017. When it first opened, it had about 450 beds. The hospital plans to keep growing and offering more services in the future.
