Bobby Wood's Club Journey
In July 2007, Bobby moved to Germany. He joined the youth academy of a team called 1860 Munich.
Playing for 1860 Munich
Bobby Wood made his first professional appearance on January 29, 2011. He came into a 2. Bundesliga match against MSV Duisburg as a substitute.
In October 2011, Wood started his first game for 1860 Munich against Hansa Rostock. He scored his first professional goal on November 30, 2012. This goal helped 1860 Munich get a 1–1 draw against VfR Aalen. In December 2012, Wood signed his first professional contract. This kept him with 1860 Munich until the 2016 season.
Loan to Erzgebirge Aue
In February 2015, Wood joined another 2. Bundesliga team, Erzgebirge Aue, on loan. He played nine league games and scored three goals for them. After his loan, the club was moved down to a lower league.
Time with Union Berlin
In July 2015, Wood signed a three-year contract with Union Berlin. During his first season with Union Berlin, he set a new record. He scored the most goals ever by an American player in Germany's top two soccer leagues.
Playing for Hamburger SV
On May 15, 2016, Wood signed a four-year deal with Hamburger SV. He made his Bundesliga debut on August 27 against FC Ingolstadt. Wood scored the first goal in that game, which ended in a 1–1 draw. His goal was even voted as the "Goal of the Week" in the Bundesliga.
He scored again on September 10 against Bayer Leverkusen. However, Hamburg then had a tough time scoring goals for over a month. This led to their manager, Bruno Labbadia, being replaced.
Wood was sent off (given a red card) in a game against 1. FC Köln. He was given a three-match ban for elbowing a player. After this, Hamburg worked hard to avoid being moved to a lower league. They managed to stay in the Bundesliga by winning their last game of the season.
In the 2017–18 season, Hamburg struggled again. They lost many games, and their managers were changed multiple times. Wood scored a penalty goal in a 3–1 win against VfL Wolfsburg. Despite a win in their final game, Hamburg was moved down to a lower league for the first time in their history. Wood also received a red card in that last match.
