Botic van de Zandschulp, born on October 4, 1995, is a professional tennis player from the Netherlands. He plays with his right hand and uses a two-handed backhand. He reached his highest singles ranking of world No. 22 on August 29, 2022. He is currently the second-best male singles player in the Netherlands.

Botic also plays doubles and reached a career-high ranking of world No. 60 in doubles on May 22, 2023. He has won one singles title and one doubles title on the ATP Challenger Tour.

His biggest moment came at the 2021 US Open. He made it to the quarterfinals, which was a huge achievement for a player who had to qualify for the tournament. He was only the third qualifier in US Open history to reach the quarterfinals. In 2022, Botic played in his first ever ATP Tour final at the Bavarian International Tennis Championships.

Botic's Professional Tennis Journey

2021: Grand Slam Debuts and US Open Success

Botic van de Zandschulp played in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time at the 2021 Australian Open. He didn't win his first match there. After this, he reached a new high ranking of No. 145 in the world. For a short time, he was even the No. 1 Dutch tennis player.

He also qualified for the French Open in 2021. There, he won his first Grand Slam match by beating Hubert Hurkacz. This was a big step for him.

In June 2021, he got into Wimbledon as a "lucky loser." This means he didn't qualify directly but got a spot because another player pulled out. He won his first match at Wimbledon but then lost in the second round. Later that year, he reached the final of the 2021 Dutch Open but lost to a fellow Dutch player.

His amazing run at the 2021 US Open was a highlight. He was the only male player that year to qualify for all four major tournaments. He beat two highly ranked players, Casper Ruud and Diego Schwartzman. He made it all the way to the quarterfinals, where he lost to the eventual champion, Daniil Medvedev. Botic was the only player to win a set against Medvedev in that tournament. This great performance helped him jump 55 spots in the rankings. He entered the top 100 for the first time, reaching world No. 62.

Later in 2021, he had another big win at the 2021 St. Petersburg Open. He beat world No. 6, Andrey Rublev, in the quarterfinals. This was his biggest win yet. He then reached the semifinals of that tournament. By the end of 2021, he was ranked No. 57 in the world.

2022: Reaching New Heights

Botic started 2022 by reaching the quarterfinals of the Melbourne Summer Set. He then made it to the third round of the 2022 Australian Open. This helped him enter the top 50 rankings for the first time.

At Indian Wells, he had another great win. He beat world No. 9, Félix Auger-Aliassime. This was his second win against a top 10 player.

In April, Botic played in Munich. He had a fantastic tournament, beating second seed Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals. He then won his semifinal match to reach his first ever ATP Tour singles final. He was the first Dutch male player to reach such a final since 2016. Sadly, he had to stop playing in the final due to chest pain.

He continued to climb the rankings, reaching the top 30 in May 2022. At the 2022 French Open, he was seeded for the first time at a major. He reached the third round, where he played against his childhood hero, 13-time champion Rafael Nadal.

In June, he reached the semifinals of the Queen's Club tournament. This was his first ATP 500 semifinal. He then reached a career-high ranking of No. 25. At Wimbledon, he made it to the fourth round, where he again lost to Rafael Nadal.

In October, Botic won his first doubles title. He teamed up with Tallon Griekspoor at the European Open in Belgium.

2023: First Top 5 Win and Second Final

Botic started 2023 by reaching the semifinals in Pune, India. At the Australian Open, he lost to his fellow countryman, Tallon Griekspoor.

In February, he had a good win against world No. 14, Karen Khachanov, in Dubai. He also reached the doubles final at the Qatar Open.

In March, Botic reached his first ever ATP Masters 1000 fourth round at the 2023 Miami Open. This was a big achievement. During this tournament, he beat third seed and world No. 4, Casper Ruud. This was his first win against a player ranked in the top 5!

In April, he reached his second ATP singles final, again in Munich. He beat world No. 10, Taylor Fritz, in the semifinals. He faced Holger Rune in the final, just like the year before. He had four chances to win the match but couldn't quite do it, losing in three sets.

In May, Botic got a new coach, Sven Groeneveld. He also reached his first Masters doubles final at the 2023 Italian Open with his partner, Robin Haase.

2024: Beating a World No. 3 and Davis Cup Finalist

In April 2024, Botic's ranking dropped out of the top 100. However, he soon started to climb back up. He reached two finals on the Challenger Tour in July and August.

At the US Open, he had an incredible win. In the second round, he defeated third seed and former world No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz was the US Open champion and had won 15 Grand Slam matches in a row. This was Botic's first win against a top 3 player and a Grand Slam winner! He was also the first Dutch player to beat a top 3 player at the US Open since 1991. He then lost in the third round.

In November, Botic helped the Netherlands reach the final of the 2024 Davis Cup. This was the first time in their country's history they made it to the final. He and Tallon Griekspoor won their singles matches against Germany to get there.
