Brandywine Hundred, also known as North Wilmington, is a special area in New Castle County, Delaware, United States. It is located just north and northeast of the city of Wilmington.

Long ago, "hundreds" were used to help organize how people were represented in the Delaware government. People often call this area Brandywine Hundred or North Wilmington. Even though its name is still on property papers, "hundreds" in Delaware are mostly just old names for places now. In 2010, about 77,182 people lived here.

What is Brandywine Hundred?

Brandywine Hundred is a part of New Castle County. It lies north of the Christina River and east of Brandywine Creek. A small part in the south is in Wilmington Hundred.

Its northern border follows a special curve. This curve is part of the 12-mile arc drawn around the town of New Castle. Brandywine Hundred was one of the first "hundreds" created in Delaware in 1682. It was named after Brandywine Creek, which flows along its western side. When it was first made, it included some land now in Wilmington Hundred. That area was separated in 1833.

How Brandywine Hundred Grew

Most of Brandywine Hundred is now a suburban area. It has many homes, businesses, and factories. There is still a wooded area along Brandywine Creek.

The eastern part of the area was built up in the early 1900s. The rest was developed after World War II. Several towns and communities are located within Brandywine Hundred. These include Bellefonte, Arden, Ardencroft, and Ardentown. Also, the areas of Claymont, Edgemoor, and Talleyville are here.

In recent years, this area has become a major "edge city" for Philadelphia. This means it's a big center for jobs and shopping outside a main city. This growth is partly due to Delaware's business laws.

Geography and Climate

Brandywine Hundred has several important natural features. These include the Christina River and Brandywine Creek. The Delaware River forms its eastern border. Other creeks like Naaman's Creek, Stoney Creek, and Shellpot Creek also flow through it.

Most of the area is in the piedmont region. This is a hilly area at the foot of mountains. It has dramatic sections of the Fall Line. This allows for many scenic views near the Delaware River. Ebright Azimuth is the highest natural point in Delaware. It is about 448 feet (137 meters) high. It is located along the northern edge of Brandywine Hundred. It is very close to the Pennsylvania state line.

The climate here is mostly humid subtropical climate (Cfa). This means it has hot, humid summers and mild winters. However, higher northern areas have a hot-summer humid continental climate (Dfa). This is because January temperatures average below freezing there. In Talleyville, average monthly temperatures range from 31.1°F (–0.5°C) in January to 75.4°F (24.1°C) in July. Near the Interstate 95/495 and Naamans Road interchange, they range from 32.8°F (0.4°C) in January to 77.4°F (25.2°C) in July. The hardiness zone is 7a, but it is 7b closer to the Delaware River.

Getting Around: Transportation

Many important roads run through Brandywine Hundred. These include parts of Interstate 95 and Interstate 495. Other key roads are Concord Pike (U.S. Route 202), Powder Mill Road (Delaware Route 141), and Naamans Road. Thompson Bridge Road (Delaware Route 92), Marsh Road (Delaware Route 3), and Foulk Road (Delaware Route 261) are also important. Delaware Route 491 and Philadelphia Pike (U.S. Route 13) are here too. Philadelphia Pike was the old main highway between Wilmington and Philadelphia.

A part of the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad runs along the Delaware River. This is now Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. Another part of the old Baltimore and Ohio Railroad also passes through. This is now CSX Transportation's Philadelphia Subdivision. It generally follows the Fall Line.
