Breddan is a small countryside area in Queensland, Australia. It is part of the Charters Towers Region. In 2021, about 478 people lived in Breddan.

Geography of Breddan

Breddan is surrounded by natural features. The Burdekin River forms its north-east border. The Flinders Highway is to the south-east. The Lynd Highway is partly to the west.

Sellheim Town

A small town called Sellheim is in the eastern part of Breddan. It was named after Philip Frederic Sellheim. He was a gold warden in Charters Towers a long time ago. The Great Northern Railway crosses the Burdekin River here. Sellheim has its own railway station.

Mount Boddington

In the middle of Breddan is Mount Boddington. It is part of the Pinnacles Range. This mountain rises about 356 meters (1,168 feet) above sea level.

Land Use

History of Breddan

Breddan has an interesting past with important structures.

Burdekin River Pumping Station

The Burdekin River Pumping Station was built between 1887 and 1891. It was a big part of the water supply system for Charters Towers. This system helped bring water to the town. It included a pumping station, a tall chimney, and a reservoir. There were also homes for workers and a school. A new electric pumping station was built in 1975.

Sellheim State School

Sellheim State School opened on November 12, 1889. It taught children in the area for many years. However, the school closed on June 5, 1939.

Breddan Aerodrome

Breddan Aerodrome was an important airfield during World War II. It was built in April 1942. At first, it was a backup field for Charters Towers airfield. In August 1942, American air squadrons used Breddan.

Later, it became a major place for fixing and salvaging aircraft. This was under the control of the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force). During 1943, many buildings were put up. These included hangars for maintenance and workshops. There were also places for torpedo storage and medical care. The base was no longer used after 1947.
