Céligny is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is part of the canton of Geneva. What makes Céligny interesting is that it has two separate parts. These parts are like small islands of Geneva. They are completely surrounded by another area called the Canton of Vaud. This makes them exclaves, meaning they are a piece of land that belongs to one area but is not connected to the main part of that area.

History

Céligny was first written about in 1163. Back then, it was called Siliniacum.

Geography

Céligny is about 4.65 square kilometers (1.8 square miles) big. A lot of its land, about 65%, is used for farming. Forests cover almost 20% of the area. About 16% of the land has buildings and roads.

The town is special because it has two disconnected parts. The smaller part includes the villages of La Grande Coudre and La Petite Coudre. This part is completely surrounded by the Canton of Vaud. This means it is both an exclave and an enclave, which is a territory completely enclosed by another territory.

The larger part of Céligny includes the main village. This village sits on a hill above Lake Geneva. This larger part is next to a piece of Lake Geneva that also belongs to the Canton of Geneva. So, this part by itself is not an exclave. But when you count it with the lake part, it forms an exclave of the Canton of Geneva.

Céligny is made up of several smaller areas or villages. These include Les Bondex, Murat, Céligny - lac (near the lake), Céligny - village (the main village), and Les Coudres.
