Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is an exciting first-person shooter video game. It was released in 2014 by Activision. This game is the eleventh main part of the popular Call of Duty series.

Sledgehammer Games developed the game for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. High Moon Studios created the versions for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Raven Software helped with the multiplayer and Exo-Zombies modes. Advanced Warfare was the first Call of Duty game mainly developed by Sledgehammer. It introduced many new features to the series.

The game's story takes place in the future, between 2054 and 2061. You follow Jack Mitchell, a former U.S. Marine. He joins Atlas, a powerful private military company. The game explores what happens when such a company gains too much power.

Exploring the Gameplay of Advanced Warfare

Advanced Warfare is a first-person shooter, just like other Call of Duty games. But it brought many new and exciting changes. For example, the game does not use a traditional screen display (HUD). Instead, all important information appears as holographic projections from your weapon.

The way you shoot and fight is mostly the same. However, new 'Exo' movements make the game much faster. These movements come from a special Exoskeleton suit. It lets players boost, dash, and jump high into the sky. This suit adds a lot of fun and strategy to battles.

The game also lets you choose different types of weapons. You can use regular firearms or advanced laser and energy weapons. Each weapon type has its own special features. The Exo suit also gives you special abilities. One is the Exo Cloak, which makes you transparent for a short time. This is great for stealth missions.

Campaign Mode: Jack Mitchell's Story

In the single-player campaign, you play as one character: Jack Mitchell. This is different from many past Call of Duty games. The story is told through amazing cinematic scenes. These scenes help you understand the plot better.

After each mission, you earn upgrade points. You can use these points to improve your Exo suit or weapons. You can make your armor stronger or your sprint faster. You can also improve your aim or reload speed. The better you play, the more points you earn. You can also find hidden 'Intel' items to get extra points. You can switch between different grenades, each with unique effects.

Multiplayer Battles: Fast-Paced Action

The multiplayer mode in Advanced Warfare keeps some things similar to older Call of Duty games. But the Exo movements make it very fast and exciting. The "Pick 10" system from Black Ops II returns as "Pick 13." This lets players choose weapons, attachments, and special abilities. You have 13 points to spend on your loadout.

You can also upgrade your score-streaks. These are special rewards you earn during a match. Upgrades give them extra powers, but they cost more points. Advanced Warfare also introduced weapon variants. These are special versions of weapons with different stats. This means there are over 350 weapons to discover! You can earn new gear through "Supply Drops." These drops give you random items like weapon variants or customization options. You can get Supply Drops by playing the game or completing daily challenges.

Exo Survival: Team Up Against Waves

Exo Survival is a cooperative game mode for up to four players. It's like a new version of the Survival Mode from Modern Warfare 3. In this mode, you and your friends fight against endless waves of computer-controlled enemies.

Players choose from four different Exo classes. Each class has unique abilities and score-streaks. You can upgrade your weapons and score-streaks as you play. After a few rounds, you get special objectives. These might be defending a spot or collecting information from fallen enemies. Completing objectives gives you bonus upgrade points. If you fail, there are consequences, like your Exo suit temporarily shutting down. Exo Survival uses the game's multiplayer maps. There are 13 maps divided into four tiers, which you unlock by surviving previous tiers.

Exo Zombies: Fighting the Undead with Exo Suits

Exo Zombies is another cooperative game mode. It was first hinted at in the Exo Survival map "Riot." This mode features zombies that wear Exo suits. This makes them faster and more dangerous than regular zombies! The mode stars five new characters.

Exo Zombies is similar to the classic Zombies mode from other Call of Duty games. Up to four players work together to survive endless waves of enemies. You can also try to complete an optional story quest during the match. Players earn points by fighting zombies. These points can be used to open new areas, buy weapons, or get special perks. You can also find Exo suits in this mode, which give you new movement abilities. There are different types of zombies, like fast Charger zombies and Electro-magnetic zombies (EMZs) that can disable your Exo suit.

The Exo Zombies story unfolds across four downloadable content (DLC) maps: "Outbreak," "Infection," "Carrier," and "Descent." In "Outbreak," a bioweapon turns people into zombies at a prison. Four Atlas employees – Oz, Lilith, Decker, and Kahn – try to escape. In "Infection," they are rescued by Atlas forces but soon face more zombies. They are then saved by Sentinel Task Force operatives. In "Carrier," Oz is removed by Captain Lennox, who believes Oz is the source of the infection. The group ends up on an Atlas aircraft carrier, fighting both zombies and Atlas soldiers. They learn Oz was part of Sentinel and was at the prison when the outbreak started. They decide to sink the carrier to stop the infection. In "Descent," the group escapes and hunts down Oz, who has become a mutated figure. After a final battle, Oz is defeated. The survivors vow to fight Atlas, unaware that Atlas has created clones of Oz.

How Advanced Warfare Was Made

Advanced Warfare was the first Call of Duty game since Call of Duty 2 to use a mostly new game engine built by Sledgehammer Games.

Before working on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Sledgehammer Games was developing another Call of Duty game. It was called Call of Duty: Fog of War. This game was planned to be an action-adventure game set during the Vietnam War. But it was put on hold when Sledgehammer joined Modern Warfare 3.

A new Call of Duty game was announced for November 2014. Director Michael Condrey said that most of the game's engine was built from scratch. This means they created new systems for graphics, animation, physics, and sound. The improved engine made the game look and sound amazing. Don Veca, who worked on the audio, said it was very advanced. Glen Schofield added that audio was just as important as other parts of the game.

Sledgehammer also focused on animations. The facial animation system was very advanced, similar to what was used in movies like Avatar: The Way of Water. Activision said the new three-year development cycle allowed Sledgehammer Games to create a "near photorealistic" world. This was unlike any Call of Duty game before it. Michael Condrey also confirmed that Advanced Warfare would feature female soldiers in multiplayer.

On June 6, 2014, it was confirmed that High Moon Studios worked on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. Sledgehammer Games focused on the PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One versions. Activision also confirmed that the game was not released on the Wii U. This made Advanced Warfare the first main Call of Duty game not to be released on a Nintendo platform since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in 2009.

Game Music and Sound

Harry Gregson-Williams, who composed music for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, returned for Advanced Warfare. Audiomachine composed the overall score for the game. The music for the Exo Zombies downloadable content pack was composed by Chris Vrenna.

Marketing and Release Details

Advanced Warfare was released one day early for players who bought the Day Zero Edition. This special version offered double XP for the first day. It also included two exclusive guns and access to special weapons and an Exo Skeleton suit.

Microsoft also released a special 1-terabyte Xbox One console bundle. It had a design inspired by the Sentinel Task Force. This bundle included a digital copy of the Day Zero Edition.

Game Reveal and Announcements

In May 2014, the official Call of Duty website showed a scrambled image. It was meant to be revealed on May 4, 2014. However, the trailer was leaked early on May 1 and then officially released. The trailer showed actor Kevin Spacey playing a character who did not like democracy. It also featured many futuristic technologies. These included cloaking aircraft, drones, hover bikes, and specialized weapons.

On June 9, 2014, E3 2014 opened with a new gameplay trailer for Advanced Warfare. It showed features like swarms of drones and infrared enemy identifiers. During the presentation, Xbox head Phil Spencer said that downloadable content for Advanced Warfare would be released first on Xbox Live. This was similar to previous games in the series.

On July 29, 2014, Sledgehammer Games released a trailer. It gave a deeper look into the campaign's story. A brief glimpse of the multiplayer was also shown. It confirmed that "score streaks" were returning from Black Ops II. A worldwide multiplayer reveal was announced for August 11, 2014, during Gamescom 2014.

On October 30, Taylor Kitsch and Emily Ratajkowski starred in a live-action trailer. It was directed by Peter Berg. This trailer was released before the game's November 4 launch.

Downloadable Content Packs

A pre-order bonus called 'Advanced Arsenal' was announced. It included a Custom Exoskeleton and special weapons for multiplayer. Advertisements also revealed that collector's editions would include a bonus multiplayer map, "Atlas Gorge." This map was a remake of "Pipeline" from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Other bonuses included an Atlas Digital Content Pack. This pack had two bonus weapons, a custom helmet, a player card, five in-game "supply drops," and a single-player upgrade token. A season pass was also included. It gave players access to four map packs released after the game. All pre-orders were upgraded to the "Day Zero Edition." This gave players 24 hours of early access to the game, double XP, and extra in-game items.

On November 3, 2014, Activision revealed four DLCs for Advanced Warfare: Havoc, Ascendance, Supremacy, and Reckoning. A new co-op mode, Exo Zombies, was announced on November 27, 2014. It was released with the Havoc DLC on January 27, 2015, for Xbox consoles. It came out on February 26, 2015, for PlayStation consoles, and March 3, 2015, for Windows.

The Ascendance DLC was released on March 31, 2015, for Xbox consoles. It came out on April 30, 2015, for PlayStation consoles and Windows. This DLC included four new maps, the second Exo Zombies map, and a new grappling hook feature. The third DLC, Supremacy, was released on June 2, 2015, for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. It included four new maps and continued the Exo Zombies story. It was released for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Windows on July 2, 2015. The final DLC, Reckoning, was released for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One on August 4, 2015. It was released for other platforms on September 3, 2015. This marked the end of the exclusive deal between Activision and Microsoft.
