Growing Up: Carol Thatcher's Early Life

Carol Thatcher was born in Hammersmith, London, on August 15, 1953. She and her twin brother, Mark Thatcher, were born six weeks early. Their mother, Margaret Thatcher, became a Member of Parliament in 1959. This meant she was elected to represent an area in the British government.

In 1960, Carol went to Queenswood School. This was a boarding school for girls. Later, she attended St Paul's Girls' School. She then studied law at University College London. After finishing her studies, she moved to Australia in 1977. This is where she started her career in journalism. While she was in Australia, her mother became the Prime Minister. Carol once said that being the child of a Prime Minister required "good shock absorbers and a sense of humour."

When she returned to Britain, she worked as a presenter for radio stations like LBC and BBC Radio 4. She also worked for TV-am. Carol wrote travel articles for The Daily Telegraph newspaper. Because her mother was a famous politician, some newspapers did not want to publish articles with Carol's name on them.

Her first book was published in 1983. It was called Diary of an Election: with Margaret Thatcher on the campaign trail. Her second book came out three years later. It was a book with tennis player Chris Evert Lloyd called Lloyd on Lloyd. This book became Carol's first best-seller.

In 1996, she wrote a best-selling book about her father. It was called Below the Parapet. In 2003, Carol made a TV show for Channel 4 about her father. It was called Married to Maggie. In this show, Carol got the only public interview her father, Denis Thatcher, ever gave. He passed away soon after the show was released. Carol has also written articles for magazines and newspapers. She has continued to work in television.
