The name Chevallum comes from local Aboriginal words. It is believed to mean "flat place."

The Chevallum State School first opened its doors on 1 November 1921. For a short time in 1924, it was a "half-time" school. This meant it shared a teacher with another school nearby. Later that year, it became a full-time school again.

The original school building is still standing today. It is now used as the Chevallum Community Centre by the Lions Club. The school moved to its current location in 1962.
