Tanawha is located inland from the beaches. This area is called the Sunshine Coast hinterland. It's also part of the larger Buderim area.
Two important roads pass through Tanawha. The Bruce Highway goes from the south-east to the north-west. The Sunshine Motorway runs along the eastern side.
A Look Back: Tanawha's History
The name Tanawha is thought to come from a Māori word. This word describes a legendary monster from New Zealand.
The Tanawha Tourist Drive was once the main Bruce Highway. But on November 16, 1989, a new road opened. This new road, called the Tanawha Deviation, took over as the main highway.
A local timber cutter named Frank Cunning worked here. He was the son of an early settler in the area. Frank ran sawmills in different places over the years. He also raised cattle on a large property near Sippy Creek.
A fun place called Bellingham Maze opened in 1993. It has added more cool attractions since then. The Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden opened its doors in 2001.
