The area was first called Merriman Flats in 1881. This name was given by the Kuskopf family, who were early European settlers.

How Palmwoods Got Its Name

The Palmwoods railway station opened in 1891. After this, the town was renamed Palmwoods. The new name came from the many Piccabeen Palm trees growing nearby.

Schools and Churches in Early Palmwoods

Palmwoods Provisional School first opened its doors on October 21, 1889. It later became Palmwoods State School in 1909. A preschool was added in 1985.

The Palmwoods Union Church was built from timber and opened in 1903. Later, other churches were built in the town.

  • St Augustine of Canterbury Anglican Church opened in 1925.

Palmwoods State School is a government primary school for students from Prep (the first year of school) to Year 6. It is located at 111 Palmwoods-Montville Road. In 2018, the school had about 495 students. It also has a special education program to help students with different learning needs.
