Churchill is bordered by two waterways. The Bremer River forms its western edge. Deebing Creek runs along its eastern side.
A Look at Churchill's History
Early Railway Days
Long ago, people in the Fassifern Valley wanted a railway line. They asked the Queensland Government to build one. The first part of the Dugandan railway line opened on 10 July 1882. It went as far as Harrisville. This was Queensland's very first branch railway line.
Churchill had its own train stop called Churchill railway station. It was located on Lobb Street. The railway line was later extended to Dugandan in 1887. The section from Churchill to Dugandan closed in 1964.
Building a Church Quickly
In 1913, a Baptist Church was built in Churchill. A special ceremony was held on 28 March 1913. Volunteers then built the church in just over four hours! They used a fast building method with parts made beforehand. The work started at 2 PM and finished by 6:15 PM for the official opening.
Churchill State School Opens
Churchill State School opened its doors on 29 January 1923. It has been teaching students ever since.
