History of One Mile

One Mile was originally known as Moopi Moopi Pa by the Quandamooka people, who are the traditional owners of the land.

How One Mile Got Its Name

The name "One Mile" comes from how far it is from the centre of Ipswich. It was about one mile from the heart of Ipswich to where the road to Toowoomba crossed the Bremer River. This crossing point is now called Old Toowoomba Road.

The bridge at this crossing was known as the One Mile Bridge for a long time. In 2015, it was renamed the Don Livingstone One Mile Bridge. This was done to honor Don Livingstone, who was a local politician for the area.

Early Settlements and Churches

In 1943, after a place called the Myora Mission closed, some people who lived there moved to One Mile. Others moved to Dunwich.

A church called Leichhardt Methodist Church opened in One Mile on September 5, 1953. This church building wasn't new; it had been moved from another town. Later, in 1977, when the Methodist Church joined with other churches to form the Uniting Church in Australia, it became Leichhardt Uniting Church. The building was taken down in 2018.

Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church opened in 1958. A school, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Primary School, opened next to the church on January 23, 1967. This was special because it was the first Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Brisbane to open without full-time religious staff. Instead, it started with two lay women teachers. In 1982, a new brick church was built, and the old church building was used for school classrooms.
