Constable is a small town located in Franklin County, New York, United States. It is found in the northern part of the county, very close to the Canada–United States border.

The town was named after William Constable, who was one of the first people to own land there. In 2010, about 1,566 people lived in Constable.

History of Constable

Constable became its own town in 1807, separating from the nearby town of Malone. Later, parts of Constable were used to create other towns, like Fort Covington (in 1817) and Westville (in 1829).

Early on, some clever shops called "line stores" were built right on the border. Part of the store was in Canada and the other part in the U.S.! This made it easier to move goods without paying special border taxes, which are called customs duties.

In June 2015, Constable became well-known because it was part of a large search. Two people who had escaped from a prison were being looked for in the area. One of them was found in Constable, very close to the border with Canada.

Geography of Constable

Constable covers a total area of about 85 square kilometers (32.8 square miles). Only a tiny part of this area is water.

The northern edge of the town is the international border between the United States and Canada. On the Canadian side, it borders the province of Quebec.

Two important roads run through Constable:

  • New York State Route 122 goes from east to west.
  • New York State Route 30 crosses NY-122 in Constable village. This road leads south to the village of Malone.
