Cooee Bay is a beautiful coastal town in Queensland, Australia. It is part of the Livingstone Shire. In 2021, about 942 people lived in Cooee Bay. This lovely spot is known for its beaches and views of the ocean.
Exploring Cooee Bay's Geography
Cooee Bay sits right on the Coral Sea to its east. It's in the middle of the Capricorn Coast. You can find it just two kilometres south of Yeppoon. It is also about 17 kilometres north of Emu Park.
Just like its neighbour Taranganba, Cooee Bay is separated from Yeppoon by Ross Creek. This creek is a popular spot for fishing.
Cooee Bay has several land points that stick out into the sea. These are called headlands:
- Wave Point
- Keppel Outlook
- Wreck Point
These headlands help create several smaller bays along the coast:
- Yeppoon Inlet, where Ross Creek meets the sea.
- Fishermans Bay, just south of Ross Creek.
- Brumms Cove, located between Wave Point and Keppel Outlook.
- Cooee Bay, found south of Keppel Outlook.
Matthew Flinders Drive is a special road for tourists. It goes up to Wreck Point. From the lookout there, you can see amazing views. You might spot Byfield, Great Keppel Island, and Rosslyn.
Out in the ocean to the east are The Keppels. This area includes the famous Great Keppel Island and other islands.
A Look Back at Cooee Bay's History
The Cooee Bay Post Office first opened on 18 September 1961. Don and Edna Schabe, who owned the local general store, started it. There is a special memorial in the park for Don Schabe. It honours his work with the Cooee Bay Progress Association. Before this post office, a smaller "receiving office" had been open since 1894. The post office eventually closed in 1977.
During World War II, many US Army soldiers stayed in Cooee Bay. It was an important location during the war.
The way local government worked changed over time. Before 2008, the Capricorn Coast was managed by the Livingstone Shire Council. From 2008 to 2013, it was part of the Rockhampton Region. Then, on 1 January 2014, the Shire of Livingstone was brought back. It now manages Cooee Bay once again.

Cooee Bay itself does not have any schools. The closest primary school is Taranganba State School. It is in the neighbouring town of Taranganba to the south. For high school, students usually go to Yeppoon State High School. This school is in Yeppoon, which is to the north-west.
