Cormoret was first mentioned in official records way back in 1178. By the end of the 1100s, the town belonged to Saint-Imier. Later, in 1317, a count named Rodolphe IV. gave the village to Jean Compagnet de Courtelary. However, it was still under the rule of the Prince-Bishop of Basel. Cormoret was part of an area called the Barony of Erguel. In 1530, the people of Cormoret decided to adopt the Reformed faith.

A big fire damaged part of the town in 1795. Even so, about thirty old buildings from the 1500s to the 1800s are still standing today. Several water-powered mills from that time also exist. Many of these mills were turned into factories in the 1800s.

The town's economy used to be based on farming. In the 1800s, watchmaking became very important. The last factory that made watch parts in Cormoret closed in 1983. In 1885, Cormoret was special because it built the first public lighting system in all of Switzerland. The town's train station was built a few years later, in 1890.
