What's in a Name?
The name Courbevoie comes from old Latin words, Curva Via. This means "curved highway". People believe this name refers to an old Roman road that used to curve sharply here. This road went up a hill where Courbevoie was built.
How the Town is Run
Courbevoie is divided into two smaller areas called cantons. These are Canton of Courbevoie-1 and Canton of Courbevoie-2. These cantons are like local districts that help manage the town.
A Look Back in Time
A long time ago, in 1606, King Henry IV of France had a scary moment. His royal coach fell into the Seine River while crossing by ferry! After this, he ordered a wooden bridge to be built across the river at Courbevoie. This bridge was later rebuilt with stone in the 1700s, and then replaced by a metal bridge in 1946.
The Convent of the Penitents was a religious building founded in 1658 in Courbevoie. It stayed there until the French Revolution in 1789. The town was also home to the barracks for the Swiss Guards. These guards protected the French monarchy.
