Dabeli, also known as Kutchi Dabeli or Double Roti, is a super popular snack from India. It comes from the Kutch region in Gujarat. Imagine a yummy, sweet, and spicy potato mix stuffed into a soft burger bun! That's Dabeli for you.

This tasty snack is made by mixing boiled potatoes with a special Dabeli spice blend. This mix is then put inside a ladi pav (which is like a small burger bun). It's served with different chutneys, often made from tamarind, dates, garlic, and red chilies. To make it even better, it's topped with fresh pomegranate seeds and crunchy roasted peanuts.

Dabeli actually means "pressed" in the Gujarati language. The story goes that a man named Keshavji Gabha Chudasama, also known as Kesha Malam, created this dish in the 1960s. He lived in Mandvi, a town in Kutch. When he first started selling Dabeli, it cost just one anna or six paisa! His original shop is still open in Mandvi, run by his family today. Many people say that the most authentic Dabeli spice mix comes from the Kutch region. Towns like Bhuj and Nakhatrana in Kutch are also famous for their delicious Dabeli.

How Dabeli is Made

Making Dabeli is quite simple, especially if you have the ingredients ready!

  • First, a special Dabeli spice mix is combined with a sweet chutney and a little water. This creates a flavorful paste.
  • Next, a pan is heated with a little oil. The Dabeli spice mixture is added and cooked for about a minute, stirring all the time.
  • Then, a soft bun is heated on the pan. It's then filled with the spiced boiled potato mixture, more Dabeli masala, and chutneys.
  • Finally, it's garnished with pomegranate seeds and roasted peanuts.

Quick Cooking Time

Dabeli is a great fast food option in India because it can be prepared very quickly.

  • If you have ready-made Dabeli masala, chutneys, crunchy Sev, roasted peanuts, pomegranate, and boiled potatoes, you can make Dabeli in just 8–10 minutes!
  • If you need to prepare everything from scratch, it might take up to 40 minutes, depending on what you have available.
