Daniel Roland Lanois is a famous Canadian record producer and musician. He was born on September 19, 1951.
He is known for producing albums for many top artists. These include Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Peter Gabriel. He also worked with Brian Eno to create a style of music called ambient music. Together, they produced several albums for the band U2. Two of these albums were The Joshua Tree (1987) and Achtung Baby (1991).
Some albums Lanois produced have won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Other albums he worked on were nominated for Grammys. Daniel Lanois has also released his own music. He wrote music for the 1996 movie Sling Blade. He also sang on some songs for the video game Red Dead Redemption 2.

His Early Life and Music Journey
Daniel Lanois was born in 1951 in Hull, Quebec, Canada. He started his music career when he was just 17 years old. He and his brother Bob Lanois recorded local artists in their mother's basement. This was in Ancaster, Ontario.
Later, Lanois opened his own studio called Grant Avenue Studio. It was in an old house in Hamilton, Ontario. There, he worked with many local bands. He also worked with the Canadian children's singer Raffi.
Becoming a Top Producer
In 1981, Lanois played on and produced an album for the band Martha and the Muffins. He even won an award for his work on their 1984 album, Mystery Walk.
Lanois worked closely with Brian Eno. Eno is another famous producer. They created music for the movie Dune. Eno then asked Lanois to help produce U2's album The Unforgettable Fire.
Lanois and Eno continued to work with U2. They produced The Joshua Tree, which won a Grammy in 1987. They also worked on Achtung Baby and All That You Can't Leave Behind. These albums were also nominated for Grammys. In 2009, Lanois helped U2 again with their album No Line on the Horizon. He helped write songs and mix the music.
Working with U2 helped Lanois become a producer for other big artists. He worked with Peter Gabriel on his movie soundtrack Birdy in 1985. Then, he spent most of 1985 producing Gabriel's album So. This album became Gabriel's best-selling record. It sold millions of copies and was nominated for a Grammy. Lanois also produced Gabriel's next album, Us, in 1992.
Bono from U2 suggested Lanois to Bob Dylan. In 1989, Lanois produced Dylan's album Oh Mercy. They worked together again in 1997 on Time Out of Mind. This album won another Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
In 1995, Lanois worked with Emmylou Harris on her album Wrecking Ball. This album won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. In 1998, he produced Willie Nelson's album Teatro.
In 2010, Lanois was working on Neil Young's album Le Noise. He had a motorcycle accident but has since recovered.
People recognize Lanois's production style. He is known for his big drum sounds and atmospheric guitars. Rolling Stone magazine called him a very important record producer.

In 2018, Lanois worked with Venetian Snares on an album called Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois.
Lanois also helped create music for the 2018 video game Red Dead Redemption 2. He received seven credits for his work on the game's soundtrack.

Daniel Lanois was honored with the Order of Canada in 2018. This is a very high award in Canada. He has won seven Grammy Awards for his work with artists like Bob Dylan, U2, Emmylou Harris, and Neil Young. He has also won several Juno Awards in Canada.
