About Daniel Tyerman
Daniel Tyerman was born on November 19, 1773. His family lived at Clack farm, near a place called Osmotherley, North Yorkshire. When he was about 17, in 1790, he found work in London.
Daniel became very interested in religion. In 1795, he joined Hoxton Academy. This was a school where he could train to become a minister. A minister is a leader in a Christian church.
Early Work as a Minister
In 1798, Daniel became a minister in Cawsand in Cornwall. Later, he moved to Wellington in Somerset. Around 1804, he worked for a short time in Southampton. After that, he settled in Newport on the Isle of Wight.
While in Newport, Daniel helped start the town's reading rooms. He also worked as the secretary for the Isle of Wight Bible Society. This group helped share Bibles with people.
His Great Missionary Journey
In 1821, Daniel Tyerman and another missionary named George Bennet were chosen for a big task. The London Missionary Society asked them to visit their mission stations far away. These stations were in the southern parts of the world.
They left London on May 2, 1821, on a ship called the Tuscan. They sailed around Cape Horn, which is at the very bottom of South America. Their journey took them to many islands in the South Pacific. They visited places like Tahiti, the Leeward Islands, and the Sandwich Islands (now called Hawaii).
In 1824, they traveled to New South Wales in Australia. On their way, they had a close call with Māori in New Zealand. From Sydney, Australia, they sailed through the Torres Straits to Java. Then they went to Singapore, Canton (now Guangzhou in China), and Calcutta (now Kolkata in India).
On May 3, 1826, they met a famous missionary named William Carey in Serampore, India. He was very kind to them. After visiting Benares, they sailed to Madras (now Chennai) and then to Goa.
From India, they continued their journey in 1827. They sailed to Mauritius and then to Madagascar. In Madagascar, the missions were doing very well under King Radama.
End of His Journey
Sadly, Daniel Tyerman's health got worse because of the warm climate in southern India. He passed away on July 30, 1828, in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

After his death, the journal from his long missionary trip was published in 1831. A poet named James Montgomery helped publish it. The first part of the journal was written with George Bennet. But the later parts were all Daniel's own words. This journal gives a clear picture of how the London Missionary Society's missions were doing at that time.
