Deerfield is a town located in Oneida County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 4,273 people lived here. The town is found on the eastern edge of Oneida County, just northeast of the city of Utica.

History of Deerfield
Deerfield was officially formed in 1798. It was created from a nearby area called the Town of Schuyler.
A famous story about early settlers in the New York frontier takes place in Deerfield. This story is told in the 1936 novel "Drums Along the Mohawk" by Walter D. Edmonds. It was also made into a movie in 1939. The main characters in the story move to Deerfield to build a farm in the Mohawk Valley.
Geography of Deerfield
Deerfield is located right north of the city of Utica. The total area of the town is about 33.1 square miles (85.6 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a small part being water.
The eastern border of Deerfield is also the border of Herkimer County. Important travel routes like the New York State Thruway and the Erie Canal pass just south of the town. The Mohawk River used to form the southern border of Deerfield. However, that part of the river is now included within the city of Utica.

Communities and Locations in Deerfield
Deerfield is home to several smaller communities and interesting spots:
- Bell Hill – This is a raised area, or elevation, located northeast of Utica. Part of it is also in Herkimer County.
- Deerfield – This is the main hamlet (a small village) of Deerfield. It's a northern suburb of Utica and is found along Route 5, near the Mohawk River and Erie Canal.
- Deerfield Heights – Another neighborhood that is a suburb of Utica, located north of the main Deerfield hamlet.
- Dewey Corners – A specific spot located south of Dewey Corners on Route 8.
- North Gage – A hamlet found in the northwestern part of the town.
- Smith Hill – Another elevation located northeast of Utica.
- Walker Corners – A location east of North Gage, also found on Route 8.
Notable People from Deerfield
Many interesting people have connections to Deerfield:
- John Atkinson (1835–1897) – Born in Deerfield, he became a well-known Methodist clergyman and author.
- Pádraig Phiarais Cúndún (1777-1856) – An Irish-American poet who wrote in the Irish language. He moved with his family to a farm near Deerfield around 1826.
- Hanmer Robbins (1815–1890) – He served as a state assemblyman in Wisconsin.
- Michael Zarnock – Born in Utica in 1958, he moved to Deerfield in 1998. He is a published author and columnist, and holds two Guinness World Records.
