Dickinson is a city in North Dakota, USA. It is the main city in Stark County. In 2020, about 25,679 people lived there. This makes it the 7th largest city in North Dakota.
Thanks to the North Dakota oil boom, Dickinson has grown very quickly. It is now one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. Dickinson is also the main city of the Dickinson Micropolitan Statistical Area. This area includes Billings and Stark counties.

History of Dickinson
Dickinson was started in 1881. It was named after its founder, W. S. Dickinson, who was from New York.
In 1924, a strong tornado hit Dickinson. It sadly caused the deaths of nine people. This made it one of the deadliest tornadoes in North Dakota's history. Another powerful tornado, called an EF3, struck in 2009. It damaged over 450 homes and businesses. About 100 buildings were too damaged to fix. Luckily, no one was hurt or killed in this tornado.
Geography and Climate
Dickinson covers about 13.27 square miles (34.36 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water. The city gets its water from Lake Sakakawea. The water travels through a special pipeline.

Dickinson has a climate with warm summers. It can sometimes have dry periods. The weather is similar to Bismarck's, but a little less extreme.

- Temperatures can reach 100°F (38°C) about 2 days a year.

- Snow usually falls between October 26 and April 19.
The coldest temperature ever recorded was -47°F (–44°C) in January 2011. The hottest was 114°F (46°C) in July 1936.

Getting Around Dickinson
You can travel around Dickinson by bus. Jefferson Lines provides bus service between cities. For travel within the city, Dickinson Public Transit offers a "dial-a-ride" service. You can call them to pick you up. It costs $4 per ride. The service runs from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. On Sundays, it runs from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
