'Diljit Dosanjh (born on January 6, 1984) is a famous Indian singer, actor, and film producer. He works in both Punjabi and Hindi movies. Diljit is a big star who has even appeared on Billboards Social 50 chart in 2020. His music has also been popular on charts in Canada, the UK, and New Zealand. Some of his movies, like Jatt & Juliet 2, Sajjan Singh Rangroot, Honsla Rakh, and Jatt & Juliet 3, are among the highest-earning Punjabi films ever!
Diljit started his career in 2002 from his village, Dosanjh Kalan, in Jalandhar. He became well-known in Punjabi music with albums like Smile (2005) and Chocolate (2008). He also worked with Yo Yo Honey Singh on The Next Level (2009). In 2010, he had a small role in the Punjabi movie Mel Karade Rabba. He then started acting in lead roles, with his first main movie being The Lion of Punjab in 2011.
In 2016, Diljit made his big debut in Bollywood (Hindi cinema) with the crime thriller Udta Punjab. For this role, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. Early Life and First Steps
Diljit Dosanjh was born on January 6, 1984, into a Sikh family. His birthplace was the village of Dosanjh Kalan in Punjab, India. His father, Balbir Singh, used to work for Punjab Roadways, and his mother, Sukhwinder Kaur, is a homemaker. Diljit has an older sister and a younger brother.
He spent his early childhood in Dosanjh Kalan. Later, his family moved to Ludhiana, Punjab, where he finished his schooling at Shri Guru Harkrishan Public School. Even while he was still in school, Diljit began his singing journey. He performed Kirtan, which is Sikh religious music, at local gurdwaras (Sikh temples).
A Star's Journey in Music and Movies
Starting His Music Career
Diljit released his first album, Ishq Da Uda Ada, in 2003. A person named Rajinder Singh from Finetone Cassettes helped him start his career in Punjabi music. Rajinder Singh was the one who suggested he use "Diljit" instead of "Daljit" for his first name.
Rising to Fame with Albums
Diljit became even more popular with his third album, Smile, released in 2005. This album included hit songs like "Nachh Diyan Alran Kuwariyan." His next album, Ishq Ho Gaya, came out in 2006, followed by Chocolate in 2008. In 2009, he released several single songs, and in 2010, his sixth album, The Next Level, was released. He also sang a song for the movie Mel Karade Rabba that year.
Entering the World of Punjabi Films
In 2011, Diljit stepped into mainstream Punjabi films. His first movie as a lead actor was The Lion of Punjab. Even though the movie wasn't a big hit, his song "Lak 28 Kudi Da" from the soundtrack became super popular. This song, which featured Yo Yo Honey Singh, even reached number 1 on a chart in the USA!
Later in 2011, his second Punjabi film, Jihne Mera Dil Luteya, was released. This movie, also starring Gippy Grewal and Neeru Bajwa, did very well. Diljit sang six songs for the film's soundtrack.
Becoming a Punjabi Film Star and Bollywood Debut
Diljit continued to work with Honey Singh in 2012, releasing the song "Goliyan." He also sang for the Bollywood movie Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya. In March 2012, he released a religious album called Sikh, which talked about the ideas of the Sikh religion.
A big moment came in June 2012 with his movie Jatt & Juliet. This film became one of the biggest hits in the Punjabi film industry! Diljit won the PTC Punjabi Film Award for Best Actor for his role. He also sang five songs for the movie's soundtrack. In November 2012, he released his eighth album, Back 2 Basics, which included the very popular song "Kharku." This song won "Best Bhangra Song of the Year" at two different awards.
In 2013, Diljit starred in Jatt & Juliet 2, a sequel to the hit film, where he played a police officer. His music video "Proper Patola" was the first Punjabi song to be featured on Vevo, getting over a million views on YouTube in just two weeks!
In 2014, Diljit starred in Punjab 1984, a film set during a difficult time in Punjab's history. This movie won a National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Punjabi. Diljit was also the first South Asian artist to visit the US headquarters of big companies like Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram all on the same day!
His first Hindi film, Udta Punjab, came out in 2016 and was a big success. He then starred in Phillauri (2017) with Anushka Sharma. In 2018, he played the main character in Sajjan Singh Rangroot, a film about World War I. Diljit is also the first turbaned Sikh to have a wax figure at Madame Tussauds, a famous wax museum! In 2019, he acted in Good Newwz alongside big stars like Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor.
Recent Success and Global Recognition
In 2020, Diljit appeared in the movie Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari. That same year, his album G.O.A.T. helped him get on the Billboard Social 50 chart, and it even reached the top of Billboard's Top Triller Global chart!
In 2021, Diljit released his twelfth album, "Moonchild Era." This album reached #32 on the Billboard Canadian Albums Chart, making him the first Indian artist to have three albums on the Billboard Charts. He also made it to the Sikh 100 list.
In 2021, he produced his first film, Honsla Rakh, where he also starred with Sonam Bajwa and Shehnaaz Gill. This movie made a lot of money on its opening day, becoming the highest-earning Punjabi film on its first day! In 2022, he signed a deal with Warner Music.
A huge moment for Diljit was in April 2023 when he performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. He was the first Indian Punjabi artist to ever perform there!
In 2024, Diljit played the Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila in a Netflix film directed by Imtiaz Ali. Critics praised his acting and singing in the movie. He also performed his songs "Born to Shine" and "GOAT" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in June 2024. He sang a promotional song for the Telugu sci-fi film Kalki 2898 AD with Prabhas. He also starred in the Punjabi comedy Jatt & Juliet 3, which became the second highest-earning Punjabi film of all time!
Diljit will also be in upcoming movies like Border 2 and No Entry 2.
His Unique Style
Diljit is always trying new things with his music and how he presents himself. He learned music from Gobinder Singh Alampuri and Kartar Singh, and their style influenced his early work. Later, working with Honey Singh added a different flavor to his music. Many music composers have also helped shape his sound. Diljit's big dream is to create a Punjabi song that becomes a worldwide hit, just like the Korean song Gangnam Style!

In August 2020, Diljit became the first Punjabi artist to be featured on the famous Times Square billboard in New York City.

Diljit has worked with many big brands. In 2015, Coca-Cola chose him to represent their brand in Punjab. Flipkart, a big online shopping company in India, also picked Diljit for their campaign in Punjab. He was also chosen as a brand ambassador for Season 4 of the Star Sports Pro Kabbadi league. He even sang the theme song for the league, "Asli Panga."
Giving Back to the Community
Diljit started an organization called Saanjh Foundation. This foundation helps underprivileged children and seniors, supporting orphanages and old age homes. It also works to help young people build self-confidence, stay healthy, deal with bullying, and get advice for their careers. The name "Saanjh" comes from his last name and means "friendship" or "unity." He launched this organization on his birthday in 2013.
