Ditherington Flax Mill: A World First

The Ditherington Flax Mill is a very special building. People sometimes call it the "Maltings." It is the oldest iron-framed building in the world. Because of its strong iron frame, it's even called the "grandfather of skyscrapers." This means it helped inspire how tall buildings are made today!

The mill was designed by Charles Bage. It was built in 1797 for John Marshall and his business partners.

This building is so important that it's a Grade I listed building. This means it's one of England's most historically significant buildings. For many years, the mill was empty and falling apart. But then, Historic England and other groups worked hard to bring it back to life.

The restored building opened to the public in September 2022. Now, you can visit a new visitor centre, a café, and even rent spaces there. The hope is that the mill will eventually earn enough money to take care of itself.

The Old Canal

The Shrewsbury and Newport Canal used to end right here in Ditherington. Canals are like man-made rivers that boats use to travel. This canal is no longer there, but some people hope it might be rebuilt one day.
