The Dronne (in Occitan: Drona) is a river in southwestern France. It is a tributary of the Isle river, meaning it flows into the Isle river. The Dronne flows through the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France.

The name of the river appears in the names of some towns. For example, the towns of Saint-Méard-de-Drône and Saint-Pardoux-de-Drône in the Dordogne department have the old form of its name. The modern name "Dronne" is seen in towns like Aubeterre-sur-Dronne.

About the Dronne River

The Dronne river is quite long. It measures about 200.6 kilometres (124.6 miles). The area of land that drains into the Dronne river, called its drainage basin, is about 2,798 square kilometres (1,080 square miles).

Where the Dronne Starts

The Dronne river begins in the Massif Central mountain range. This is in the town of Bussière-Galant, which is in the Haute-Vienne department. This area is part of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.

The river starts in a special natural area called the Parc naturel régional Périgord Limousin. Here, the Dronne begins at a height of about 486 metres (1,594 foots) above sea level.

Where the Dronne Flows

From its source, the Dronne river flows towards the southwest. It eventually joins the Isle river in the town of Coutras. This town is in the Gironde department. At this point, the river is only about 4 metres (13 foots) above sea level.

The Dronne river passes through many different places. It flows through 5 departments and 52 towns, all within the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Some of the main towns it passes through include:

Main Rivers Joining the Dronne

Many smaller rivers and streams flow into the Dronne. These are called tributaries. Here are some of the main ones:

  • Rivers joining from the left:
    • Côle - about 51.5 km long
    • Rizonne - about 26.7 km long
  • Rivers joining from the right:
    • Lizonne - about 60.5 km long
    • Tude - about 43.3 km long
