East Francia (which means Eastern Frankish Kingdom in Latin) was a large kingdom in Europe. It was created in the year 843. This happened after the Treaty of Verdun.
The Treaty of Verdun divided the huge Carolingian Empire. This empire was ruled by the Franks. It was split into three parts: East, West, and Middle. East Francia was the eastern part. Over many years, East Francia slowly became what we know today as Germany. It also played a big part in forming the Holy Roman Empire.

When Did East Francia Exist?
East Francia existed from 843 until 919. In 919, Duke Henry I of Saxony became the king. Some people think the Holy Roman Empire truly began later, in 962. This was when Otto I the Great became emperor.
How Was East Francia Organized?
East Francia was divided into four main areas. These areas were called duchies. Each duchy had its own duke.
Later, in 869, more land was added. This was the eastern part of Lotharingia. These divisions stayed mostly the same for a long time. They lasted until 1268.
What Was It Called Later?
From the 10th century onwards, East Francia got another name. It was called Regnum Teutonicum. This means "Teutonic kingdom" or "Kingdom of Germany". This name became common during the time of the Salian rulers.
