East Rutherford is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey. It is a town near New York City, about 7 miles (11 km) west of Midtown Manhattan. In 2020, the town's population was 10,022. This was an increase of over 1,100 people since the 2010 census.

East Rutherford became a town on April 17, 1889. It was first called Boiling Springs Township. The town got its current name, East Rutherford, on March 28, 1894. This change was part of a time when many new towns were formed in Bergen County.

East Rutherford is famous for being home to the Meadowlands Sports Complex. This huge complex includes MetLife Stadium and the Meadowlands Arena. It used to have Giants Stadium too. The Meadowlands Arena was once home to professional hockey and basketball teams.

MetLife Stadium is where the New York Giants and New York Jets NFL teams play. It also hosted Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. This made East Rutherford the smallest city ever to host a Super Bowl. The stadium will also host eight matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including the final game.

East Rutherford is also home to American Dream Meadowlands. This is a very large shopping and entertainment center. It opened on October 25, 2019.

East Rutherford is in Bergen County, New Jersey. It covers about 4.04 square miles (10.47 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

The town is bordered by several other places. To the north are Carlstadt and Wallington. To the south is Rutherford. It also borders Secaucus in Hudson County and Passaic in Passaic County. The Passaic River is on its western side, and the Hackensack River is on its eastern side.

The population was diverse. About 73% of residents were White. About 14% were Asian, and 4.5% were Black or African American. About 17.5% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

What is the Economy Like?

East Rutherford is home to several businesses. The Hudson Group is based here. They run many newsstands, bookstores, and restaurants, especially in airports and train stations.

Cambrex Corporation, a company that makes medicines, is also located in East Rutherford. The East Rutherford Operations Center handles money for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. They process millions of currency notes every day.

The Dawn Bible Students Association moved to East Rutherford in 1944. This organization publishes books and a magazine about the Bible.

Schools in East Rutherford

Public Schools for Younger Students

Students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade go to schools in the East Rutherford School District. There are three schools in the district. In the 2022–23 school year, about 750 students attended these schools.

  • McKenzie School serves students in grades PreK–3.
  • Lincoln School is for students in grades 4–5.
  • Alfred S. Faust School teaches students in grades 6–8.

High School Education

For grades ninth through twelfth grade, students attend Becton Regional High School. This high school is also in East Rutherford. It serves students from East Rutherford and Carlstadt. Students from Maywood also attend this school.

In the 2022–23 school year, Becton Regional High School had about 771 students.

Specialized Technical Schools

Students in Bergen County can also attend specialized technical programs. These are offered by the Bergen County Technical Schools. This includes the Bergen County Academies in Hackensack. There are also Bergen Tech campuses in Teterboro and Paramus. These schools offer special programs for students who want to learn specific skills.

Police Department

The East Rutherford Police Department keeps the borough safe. It has different parts, like the Patrol Division and Detective Bureau. The Chief of Police is Dennis M. Rivelli.

Fire Department

The East Rutherford Fire Department (ERFD) is made up of volunteers. It was started in 1894. The department has a chief and three assistant chiefs. There are three fire stations in town. About eighty trained firefighters work for the ERFD.

The ERFD uses several types of fire trucks:

  • Two fire engines
  • A ladder truck
  • A heavy rescue vehicle
  • A quint (a truck that combines features of an engine and a ladder)

The ERFD also provides emergency medical services to the town.

Roads and Highways

East Rutherford has many roads. As of 2010, there were over 30 miles (49 km) of roadways. Some roads are maintained by the town, others by Bergen County, and some by the state.

You can get around East Rutherford using public transportation.

  • Trains: The Rutherford station offers train service on NJ Transit's Bergen County Line. The Meadowlands station also provides train service. This line connects the Meadowlands Sports Complex to Secaucus Junction.
  • Buses: NJ Transit buses serve East Rutherford. Routes like the 160, 163, and 164 go to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan. The 76 route goes to Newark, and the 703 route provides local service.
