EcoQuest: The Search for Cetus is an exciting adventure game that also teaches you important lessons. It was made by a company called Sierra On-Line. The main idea for the game came from Bill Davis. Game designers Jane Jensen and Gano Haine helped create it.

This game is part of Sierra's famous Quest series. EcoQuest helps players learn about environmental ethics. This means understanding how to protect our planet. The game is easier than many other adventure games. You cannot get stuck or lose the game. It uses a mouse to control everything. The game first came out in 1991 on floppy disk. A version with full voice acting was released on CD-ROM in 1992.

What's the Story?

The main character is a 10-year-old boy named Adam Greene. Adam's dad is an expert in ecology. Adam himself is a great scuba diver. One day, Adam helps his dad rescue a dolphin named Delphineus.

Things get really interesting when the dolphin starts talking! Soon, Adam is on a quest to find Cetus. Cetus is the sperm whale king of Eluria. Eluria is a secret underwater kingdom. Many marine animals live there. Adam gets help from different creatures he meets. These creatures come from various ecosystems around the world.

Even though animals talk, the game feels very real. It teaches you about the environment. It also shows the problems caused by pollution in the real world.

How Do You Play?

The Search for Cetus is a point-and-click adventure game. You solve puzzles and problems to move the story forward. These puzzles are similar to those in games like Castle of Dr. Brain.

The game added a special recycling symbol to its controls. You get extra points for picking up trash in the ocean. This teaches you about keeping our waters clean. The game helps kids aged 12 and up learn about marine biology. It also teaches about marine conservation.

You learn about the effects of human actions, such as:

  • Dumping trash
  • Releasing balloons into the air
  • Leaving fishing gear behind
  • Boats hitting marine animals
  • Oil and chemical spills
  • Too much fertilizer causing algal blooms

What About the Next Game?

The next game in the series is Lost Secret of the Rainforest. It's also known as EcoQuest II. In this game, Adam is a bit older. He can now talk to animals easily. He explores a tropical rainforest.

Adam is looking for a cure for a disease. This disease is affecting the local Indigenous peoples of South America. He also wants to save the rainforest from being destroyed. A cool new tool in this game is the "Ecorder." It's like a special device Adam uses. He learns about new things he finds during his journey.

The second game is a bit harder than the first. It focuses more on the dangers of being selfish and greedy. It shows how these actions can harm the environment.
