Edith Eleanor Bowman (born in 1974) is a Scottish radio DJ and television presenter. She is known for hosting shows on BBC Radio 1 until 2014. She has also presented many music-related TV shows and covered big music festivals. Since 2020, Edith has hosted the yearly Scottish Music Awards ceremony.

Early Life and Education

Edith Bowman was born in 1974 in Anstruther, a town in Fife, Scotland. She went to Waid Academy for secondary school in Anstruther. Later, she studied Media and Communication at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh.

Edith Bowman has had a long career in both television and radio.

Television Work

Edith's first job on TV was as a news reader for MTV UK. She then hosted many shows for MTV, including Hitlist UK with Cat Deeley. They also presented a travel show called Roadtripping for BBC Choice in 2002.

In 2002, Edith also worked on Channel 4's morning show RI:SE. She later co-presented Top of the Pops, a famous music chart show, several times until it ended its weekly run. She even returned for the 2006 Christmas Special. During the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020, she interviewed filmmaker Sofia Coppola remotely for a BBC4 series.

Edith has presented various music shows for Channel 4, like Channel 4 Presents... and Evo Music Rooms. She also appeared on the children's art show SMart in 2007. She has covered major music festivals such as Glastonbury, T in the Park, and Reading and Leeds Festival for both BBC Radio and TV. In 2011, she was a reporter for BBC TV's coverage of the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

In December 2021, Edith appeared on Celebrity Antiques Road Trip with fellow radio host Mark Radcliffe. In August 2024, she reached the quarter-finals of Celebrity MasterChef.

From 2001 to 2002, Edith presented Hit Music Sunday with Cat Deeley on Capital London. In March 2003, she joined Colin Murray to host Colin and Edith on BBC Radio 1. This show moved to weekday afternoons in April 2004.

In August 2006, Edith became the only host of the BBC Radio 1 afternoon show. After taking time off for maternity leave, she returned in September 2008. In July 2009, she moved to Weekend Breakfast on Radio 1. She later moved to Tuesday evenings to host The Review Show in February 2012. Her last Review Show was in September 2014, which marked the end of her time at Radio 1.

In November 2012, she started co-hosting a Saturday morning show on BBC Radio 6 Music with Adam Buxton. In February 2016, Edith became the first solo female breakfast show host on commercial radio with the launch of Virgin Radio UK. She left that show in September 2017.

Edith often fills in for other presenters on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Radio 2. Since November 2024, she has hosted Cinematic Soundtracks on BBC Radio 3 Unwind.

Podcast

Edith Bowman hosts a weekly podcast called Soundtracking. In this podcast, she interviews filmmakers about the music that inspires them and their choices of music in movies.

Key Career Moments

In 2005, Edith presented BBC Scotland's coverage of the Live 8 event in Edinburgh. She also hosted the BBC's T in the Park programmes. That same year, she hosted the Q Awards live on BBC Radio 1 with Colin Murray. She also presented TV coverage of Glastonbury, T in the Park, and the Reading Festival for BBC Three. She co-presented the BBC coverage of Live Earth on July 7, 2007.

Charity Work

In May 2008, Edith Bowman supported the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign. This campaign helped Breakthrough Breast Cancer. She joined other famous people like comedian Alan Carr and singer Natalie Imbruglia.

From 2015 to 2017, Edith hosted the yearly Young Scot Awards, which celebrate the achievements of young people in Scotland.

Singing Talent

Edith Bowman's first time on television was on a talent show called The Big Break when she was 14. She sang a cover of Bananarama's "Venus" but finished last in her heat.

On March 11, 2005, she won the TV talent show Comic Relief Does Fame Academy. This was a charity music contest where she sang "Champagne Supernova" with Jools Holland's band.

Personal Life

Edith Bowman married Editors frontman Tom Smith in 2013. They have two sons, who were born in 2008 and 2013.
