Evilard/Leubringen is a cool, bilingual town in Switzerland. It's located in the canton of Bern. The town has two names: Evilard in French and Leubringen in German.

This municipality includes two main settlements. They are called Evilard and Macolin in French. In German, they are known as Leubringen and Magglingen. There's also a countryside area called Pré de Macolin.

Evilard was first mentioned in old writings around the year 1300. Back then, it was known as Lomeringen. Later, French speakers started calling it Evillard or es Villard. This means "in the town."

During the Middle Ages, some monasteries and the Bishopric of Basel owned land here. However, the city of Biel was in charge of the town's laws and military. From 1798 to 1815, Evilard was part of France.

After that, in 1815, the town became part of Switzerland again. It joined the Canton of Bern. People in Evilard once debated joining the city of Biel/Bienne. But in 1902, the residents decided against it.

Where is Evilard Located?

Evilard sits about 697 meters (2,287 feet) above sea level. It's only about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) north of Biel/Bienne, a bigger city. The town is on a sunny slope of the Jura mountains. This spot is about 300 meters (984 feet) higher than Biel.

On a clear day, you can see amazing views from Evilard. You can look out over the Swiss plateau and even see the Alps.

The municipality stretches up to the Montagen de Macolin mountain. It includes the town of Evilard and the surrounding Malvaux forest. To the southwest, it reaches the peak of Magglingerberg. This is the highest point in the municipality, at 1,070 meters (3,510 feet).

Evilard is made up of the villages of Evilard and Macolin. Macolin (also called Magglingen) is located higher up, at 875 meters (2,871 feet). The towns next to Evilard are Biel/Bienne, Orvin, Lamboing, and Twann-Tüscherz.

About 30% of Evilard's land is used for farming. Nearly 40% is covered by forests. The rest, about 29%, has buildings and roads.

Evilard has a population of about 2,600 people. Around 10% of the people living here are from other countries.

Most people in Evilard speak German as their main language. About 60% speak German. The second most common language is French, spoken by about 34% of the people. A smaller number speak Italian.

Looking at the age groups, about 21% of the population are children and teenagers (under 19). Adults (20-64 years old) make up about 55%. Seniors (over 64 years old) are about 24% of the population.

What's the Economy Like in Evilard?

For a long time, farming was the main activity in Evilard. But since the 1950s, many people who work in Biel/Bienne have built homes here. This has made Evilard a popular place to live for commuters.

Macolin, one of Evilard's villages, became a resort area around 1875. This was because of its sunny location high up. Today, it has many places for tourists. It's also home to the Swiss Federal Office of Sport (FOSPO). This is the Swiss government's main center for sports.

In 2011, Evilard had a low unemployment rate of 1.74%. Most jobs in Evilard are in the service sector. This includes things like sales, transportation, hotels, restaurants, and healthcare. Some people also work in farming, manufacturing, and construction.

Many people who live in Evilard travel to other towns for work. About 24% use public transportation, and 58% use a private car.

Religion in Evilard

Based on a 2000 survey, about half of the people in Evilard belong to the Swiss Reformed Church. About 22% are Roman Catholic. There are also smaller groups of people who follow other Christian faiths, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, and Hinduism. About 16% of the population said they didn't belong to any church.

Learning and Education

Many adults in Evilard have a good education. About 40% have finished high school. Nearly 25% have gone on to college or a specialized university.

The schools in the Canton of Bern follow a specific system. Kids usually start with one year of optional Kindergarten. Then they go to six years of Primary school. After that, they have three years of required Secondary school. In Secondary school, students are grouped by their abilities. After Secondary school, students can continue their education or start an apprenticeship.

In the 2009-2010 school year, 241 students attended schools in Evilard. There were 36 kindergarten students and 89 primary school students. Some students in Evilard's schools are from other countries or speak a different language at home.

Getting Around Evilard

It's easy to get around Evilard. Roads connect it to Biel/Bienne and Orvin. There are also two funiculars (special mountain railways) that make travel easy.

The Bienne–Evilard Funicular opened in 1898. It connects Biel/Bienne and Evilard. The Biel–Magglingen Funicular also links Biel/Bienne to Magglingen.
