History of Florham Park

Early Days and Name Changes

Long ago, the Lenape tribe of Native Americans lived in this area. European settlers from England and the Netherlands arrived between 1680 and 1700. The land was great for farming.

This area was once known for making good brooms, so people called it Broomtown. Over time, Florham Park had many names like Hoppingtown, Columbia, and Afton. It was part of bigger townships before becoming its own borough in 1899.

How Florham Park Got Its Name

The name "Florham Park" comes from two large estates. One was called "Florham." It belonged to Florence Adele Vanderbilt Twombly and her husband, Hamilton McKown Twombly. Florence was the granddaughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt, a very rich man.

They built a huge English-style mansion called "Florham" on 840 acres. The name "Florham" was a mix of their first names: Florence and Hamilton.

The second part of the town's name came from another big estate called "Brooklake Park." This estate was about 1,000 acres and had a beautiful lake. It belonged to Leslie Ward, who helped start the Prudential Insurance Company.

Both the Twombly and Ward families helped the town become its own municipality. After the New Jersey government voted, Florham Park officially became a borough on March 20, 1899. The new town was named after their famous estates.

Where is Florham Park?
