Floyd is a small town located in Oneida County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 3,733 people lived there. The town is named after William Floyd, who was one of the important people who signed the Declaration of Independence.

The Town of Floyd is situated just east of the City of Rome. The Erie Canal, a famous waterway, runs along the southern edge of the town.

History of Floyd

People first started settling in the Floyd area around 1790. The Town of Floyd was officially created in 1796. It was formed from another town called Steuben. William Floyd, the person the town is named after, moved to Oneida County in 1794.

Over the years, the number of people living in Floyd changed. In 1865, there were 1,227 residents. By 1920, the population had decreased to 663 people.

In the 1800s, Floyd was known for its involvement in important social movements. People in Floyd were active in groups like the Masons. They also supported learning and politics. Many residents were involved in the movement to end slavery, known as abolitionism.

The Camroden Presbyterian Church is a historic building in Floyd. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 because of its importance.

Floyd was even mentioned briefly in a 1996 movie called "City Hall." In the film, the main characters got stuck in Floyd while waiting for snow to be cleared from the train tracks.

Floyd covers a total area of about 34.8 square miles (90.1 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 34.6 square miles (89.66 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.2 square miles (0.45 square kilometers), is water.

The Mohawk River forms the southern border of the town. Floyd has gentle, rolling hills that get higher as you go north. These hills reach an elevation of about 200 to 300 feet above the river. A stream called Nine Mile Creek flows through the southeastern part of the town. Long ago, this creek was known by a different name, Te-ya-nun-sak, which meant "a beech tree standing."
