Places in Frederic Township
Frederic Township is home to a few different communities. Some of these are "unincorporated," meaning they don't have their own separate local government like a city or village.
Deward: A Former Lumber Town
Deward is an unincorporated community in the township. No one lives there anymore. It was named after a rich lumber businessman, David Ward. His family started a mill there in 1901 to cut down the many trees in the area. A post office opened in Deward that same year. The mill stopped working in 1912, and by 1932, everyone had left the community. The post office also closed.
Frederic: A Historic Village Stop
Frederic is another unincorporated community. It is in the northeast part of the township, near the middle branch of the Au Sable River. The special mail code, or ZIP Code, for Frederic (49733) covers a very large area around it.
Frederic started as a village around 1874. It was a stop along the Michigan Central Railroad. It was first called Forest because it was part of Maple Forest Township. A post office opened here in 1877, first named Fredericville. The name was shortened to Frederic in 1886.
Ishaward: In the Northwest
Ishaward is also an unincorporated community. You can find it in the northwestern part of Frederic Township.

Frederic Township covers a total area of about 72 square miles (186 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
Location and Rivers
The township is in the northern part of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. It sits in the northwest corner of Crawford County. To the north, it borders Otsego County. To the west, it borders Kalkaska County.
The Au Sable River flows south through the eastern part of the township. It then continues towards the town of Grayling. The Manistee River flows south through the western part of the township. It then turns southwest.
Nearby Parks and Forests
You can find Hartwick Pines State Park close by. Also, a part of the Huron-Manistee National Forests is nearby. These areas offer lots of natural beauty and outdoor fun.

The Au Sable River starts at the eastern edge of the township. The Manistee River is on its western edge. Between these rivers are thousands of acres of rolling hills. These areas include state and national forests.

Frederic Township is perfect for many outdoor sports. You can go camping, canoeing, and hiking. It's also a good spot for horseback riding and cross-country skiing. If you like to fish, you can find trout here. The area also has hundreds of miles of trails for off-road vehicles and snowmobiles. These trails are easy to reach from the village.
Forbush Corners: Skiing Excellence
Forbush Corners, located in Frederic, is known around the world for cross-country skiing. It's a great place to learn and train. The area often gets snow early and keeps it late because of its special "snow belt micro climate." David Forbush, a skilled amateur ski racer, designed and takes care of the trails. Many people say it's one of the best privately owned ski systems in the Midwest.
