The Governorate of New Toledo was a special area in South America. It was controlled by the Spanish Empire for a short time. This area was once the southern part of the Inca Empire. It stretched into what is now central Chile and central Brazil.
King Charles I of Spain created this governorate in 1528. A Spanish leader named Diego de Almagro was chosen to be its governor. A governorate was like a large province ruled by a governor.
New Toledo existed until 1542. It was then replaced by a larger Spanish territory called the Viceroyalty of Peru.
Spanish Control in South America
After Spain and Portugal divided South America, Spain organized its new lands. They created several large areas called governorates. This helped them manage the vast territories they had claimed.
Here are the main governorates Spain set up in South America:
- Province of Tierra Firme: This area included the Caribbean coast. It also covered parts of Central America and the Pacific coast of Colombia and Mexico.
- Governorate of New Castile: This region stretched from the border of Ecuador and Colombia south to Cuzco.
- Governorate of New Toledo: This was the southern part of the former Inca Empire. It reached towards central Chile.
- Governorate of New Andalusia: Spain did not fully conquer this area until many years later.
- Governorate of New León: This was the southernmost part of the continent. It extended all the way to the Strait of Magellan.
- Governorate of Terra Australis: This name was given to lands south of the Strait of Magellan. It even included territories towards the South Pole.
This way of dividing the land helped Spain rule South America for many decades. However, these governorates were officially ended in 1544. King Charles I then sent Blasco Núñez Vela to govern the new Viceroyalty of Peru. This new viceroyalty replaced the older governorates.
