History of Greenville
Greenville was first settled in 1850. It was originally called "Sandy Ford". During the American Civil War, it was renamed "Station Five". This name came from its spot along the Pensacola and Georgia Railroad.
How Greenville Got Its Name
The town was officially made a town in 1907. It was named "Town of Greenville" because of a special reason. During the US Civil War, a group of women in the community had a sewing circle. They helped sew for Confederate soldiers. After the war, the postmaster and other residents decided to name the town after the birthplace of Mrs. U.M. Roberts. She was the president of that sewing circle, and she was from Greenville, North Carolina.
Famous Residents
The famous musician Ray Charles lived with his mother in Greenville during his childhood. There is even a statue of him in Greenville Park today.

Greenville is located in the western part of Madison County. Its exact coordinates are 30.467 degrees North latitude and 83.635 degrees West longitude.
Roads and Travel
Several important roads pass through or near Greenville:
- U.S. Route 90 goes through the north side of town. It leads east about 13 miles to Madison, which is the county seat. It goes northwest about 16 miles to Monticello.
- U.S. Route 221 runs through the center of Greenville. It goes south about 26 miles to Perry and north about 24 miles to Quitman, Georgia.
- Interstate 10 is about 2 miles south of town. You can get onto US-221 at Exit 241. I-10 goes west about 41 miles to Tallahassee, the state capital. It goes east about 63 miles to Lake City.
