History of Gruma
How Gruma Started
The first factory to make corn flour in an industrial way opened in 1949. It was called "Molinos Azteca." This name was later shortened to "Grupo Maseca." The company grew quickly.
Growing Beyond Mexico
In 1973, the government of Costa Rica invited the company to open a factory there. This started a long tradition of Gruma investing outside of Mexico. In 1977, Grupo Maseca opened a branch in California, USA. This was a new step for making tortillas in the United States. In 1982, Maseca opened its first factory in Texas to make a special kind of corn flour called nixtamalized corn flour.
Changes and Growth in the 1990s
During the 1990s, changes in government rules in Mexico helped Gruma grow a lot. The government encouraged companies to use corn flour more. This was good for Gruma because it was a main supplier. By 1990, the company had branches in North America and Central America. These included the United States, Honduras, and Costa Rica. Also in 1990, the company's shares were first sold on the Mexican Stock Exchange. It was listed as "GIMSA," which stands for "Grupo Industrial Maseca."
Becoming a Global Company
Gruma became a holding company after buying a part of Banorte in 1992. A holding company owns parts of other companies. After this, Gruma continued to expand around the world. It opened a branch in Coventry, England in 2000. Then, in 2006, it opened another one in Shanghai, China. In 2010, Gruma also expanded into Ukraine.
